bought a 27' Excaliber ('81) with a 502 #14096859(?) and a TRS outdrive #5626542 last week from Baltimore area, brought it back to Louisville, had a friend look at it in the drive, hooked up the hose and started it for 2-4 minutes, tested throtle and Trans, all fine, took it to lake, off-loaded it from trailer in cove ran it about 3-4 minutes and back to dock. It started smoking slightly white colored smoke, looked at temp guage which was nearing 200*. shut it down and waited for it to cool. Tried to run it again and it doesn't start. Spark plugs, wires fine, Oil seems to be fine, does not appear to have water in engine. Starter turns over motor, buts it makes a audible "whump" sound and will not run. Any other ideas. I have not replaced thermostat yet or water impellor, but will next week. Also looking into "hydrolock" and read from L.I. Chuck on another hydro-debacle that he suggested putting Quick Silver in radiator after water flushed out (if that is the problem) to help seal small leaks. Where is this done with no radiator present, or can/should it be done in lieu of tearing down motor. or am I just over-reacting.

Also in a related (distantly) topic, with this having a TRS drive, and that being equivalent to a dinosaur, should I consider replacing that as well, and if so, with what. The pre-owner of the boat estimated that after being slightly modified, the motor runs between 430-450hp.Thanx.
