Re: hydro electric drive

Howdy, Crazybear-UK.

The "hydro-electric" referred to is the shifting system.

There is an oil pump in the lower end. There are also 2 solenoids that operate valves to direct the oil pressure. If neither solenoid is engeged, you will be in forward. Engage one and you are in reverse. Engage the other and you are in neutral.

Any good service manual (which you need. Click on "Repair Manuals" at the bottom of the page)will include details and diagrams.

Good luck. :)

Crazybear....is there two or one control cable coming from the controls? Your discription wasn't to clear on this. If one cable, it's still electric shift, if two cable, it has been converted to mechanical shift. No electric used.

Jim

Re: hydro electric drive

yes there are two mechanical cables no electrics.
so does this mean the hydro electrical part has been by-passed (no longer used)

Re: hydro electric drive

Crazy...... Model # 50373R is a 1973 50hp Evinrude, not a Johnson. Due to you mentioning "Johnson" and "Hydro Electric" it sounds like you have a engine that has been built out of a couple of other engines if those names are indeed on your engine. This is perfectly okay if the building has been done properly.

The 1973 engine does not have a electric shift type lower unit, it is a mechanical shift unit. The "Hydro Shift" models were built between 1968 and 1972.

Re: hydro electric drive

thanks for the info i think you hit the nail on the head (joe)the engine was apparently used by a race team. i think that the cover and cowl is off the johnson and the rest is hopfully evenrude which from what i can see. makes sence now
regards to all.
