I am having the same problem with VolvoPenta 5.7gs and could use a little assistance.... I had a situation on the lake(freshWater) where at some point in the day the boat would not shut off (dieselled) until I turned the key back on and then back off. Only happened this one time... but later once we stopped the boat for a little swimming and tried to start back up, it hydrolocked and sheared off a starter bolt... have fixed that already(twice now) and had water in most all cylinders, both sides of engine... I was reading a post that said the dieselling could cause water to back up through the exhaust... I have checked the manifolds and risers plus gaskets and all appear to be ok... also have checked water in the thermostat housing for bubbles when turning over the engine to try and prove out if a head gasket was leaking and all seems ok there.... so I am hoping the engine and all components are fine, just got water in through the exhaust somehow... possible? Thanks !!!

When I pulled the manifolds I was totally missing the exhaust flap on the side the water entered. The flap on the other side was pretty rough also.
Thats how the water entered my engine. I went ahead and replaced the manifolds, risers, and flaps and that stopped the water from coming in.

Mine is a 2000 and does not have the flaps... I am being told so many different things.... No one here believes the "dieseling" sucking water back in thru the exhaust theory... One expert says HeadGasket, so I am in the process of trying to prove out that theory... so far preliminary simple test prove ok... I haven't pulled the exhaust manifolds yet... I showed water in most all cylinders to some degree... #8 and #5 poured out and the other cylinders just showed traces.... so water on both sides of engine, which could be true due to getting into intake and going accross plenum... Today I am going to perform a compression test and leak down test... I want to prove that it's not a HeadGasket before I do anything drastic... and I guess it could still be in the exhaust manifold gasket? The Risers and Riser gaskets didn't show any signs of trouble... I guess I just want to be able to prove where the water really came from before I put it all back together... Is it really, really, really possible to suck water back in thru the exhaust?
