I may have missed something along the way here, but, why are you needing to pull the drive for the compression test?

Do I not need to spin the engine and will that not spin the impellor? It would be nice if I didn't have to take it off again, but won't spinning the engine with the starter turn the impellor enought to damage it?

Nah, you,re fine. Engine isn't actually running, and not spinning very fast for very long

I was thinking heck just put some water to it, but I forgot you have the risers and exhaust all apart, probably would not want to hook up the water then...

Re: Hydro locked?

I'm Back.

I had to take the exhaust off to get the compression tester in the holes.
Well here are the results, first number being dry, second wet.

#2 170/175

#4 160/165

#6 165/170

#8 165/170

Does this rule out head gasket or head or block damage? I guess what confusing me is that there is water only in #4.

Ken.

I would not think It would be block damage as it is only affecting once cylinder , It sill could be the head if there is a hole behind the valve you would still get good compression , just a thought can't rember if you can do this but could you swap the manifolds over left to right you would have to turn the riser round As they would be pointing the wrong way round, if you then get water in the other side you would know it was the manifold ? Just a thought !

Re: Hydro locked?

Well I did the preasure test and sure enough its leaking out the #4 spark plug. I put the piston to top dead centre, closing the valves and it held air. What does this mean, if anything.

I figure this means a head issue, so I started taking it apart. Got the intake off and have to go to work.

Tomorrow I will take the head off and get it tested.

Any coments or advice accepted.....

What did you pressurize, just the engine?

If you blocked off the lines so it isolated the motor pull off the intake manifold and check for a crack in it.

Re: Hydro locked?

I think I found the problem. The head gasket was pooched. I took the head in to have it checked and they said it was fine, but thought it should be refaced. The spot where the leak was, was a little low. I have all the gaskets and am going to pick up the head today. Should have it back together by Saturday. Here is a couple of pictures

Not the usual place for them to go. But it would cause your problems. And it must have been big enough for the water to get pushed out into the water jacket when you were trying to start it.

Whats better to use on head bolt threads, Perfect Seal or Permatex thread sealer. I have both.

Used perfect seal as stated in manual.

When adjusting the valves. the manual says to remove lash from prescribed valve on compression stroke. After I follow that proccedure, thats it?

What manual are you using? Typically you will then turn the adjustment an additional 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. It can be tricky finding "zero lash" or "removing all the lash." It takes a certain amount of "feel" to keep from overtightening.

Re: Hydro locked?

Its the Merc Manual 17. I'll look again, but I didn't see any mention of aditional turns in non runnung. If someone could give me a definite answer in regards to this that would be great as I would like to fire it soon.

Thanks....
