Hydroelectric shift problems

I have a 69 Johnson Hydroelectric shift and motor(# 85ESL69). I finally got my motor started but when it started it was in full bore forward even though the stick shift was in neutral. How can i get it to have r and N. he boat sat for awhile and im tring to go fishing but at this point if im in the water i have to be pointed out at the lake or ill just take off!! A very novice boater needs your help!!

USMCGUY<br />Do u still have a problem, Write back and i have a few easy test to with a 12v tester.does your control box have a warmup lever or buttons.

Try to stop the prop with a brrom stick. Sometimes a prop will turn just from the inertia in the L/U

I wouldn't advise trying to stop the prop with a broomstick. :eek: My '71 60hp had the same problem and I found a bad shift switch. If I would have stuck a broomstick in the prop I would at least be minus a broomstick and possibly an arm. Let us know if you have other probs.
