I have a franken evinrude. Serial number I believe is 65272es which should tell me if i am correct that the power head on the lower unit is a 1972 Evinrude 65 hp

. Last year after finding a lower unit leak I resealed everything to find that the lower unit was not original, and as far as I could tell actually came from a 1969 Evinrude most likely a 60 hp.

well due to my own stupid mistake I had the lower unit apart the other day as it stopped shifting so I wanted to pull solenoids and test resistance which was showing 3.5 ohms great.
When i went to put the lower unit back together i didn't align it properly and broke the shift rod.

Fast forward I picked up a seller claimed 1970 Evinrude 60 hp hydroelectric shift.

However in my discovery last year the seals and solenoids and bearing carriers are actually different from the earlier to later generations. (Yes I do understand the difference between electric shift and Hydro electric shift).

So can anyone tell me what year they actually changed the solenoid style. My earlier had one with a plastic piece small shift rod and long springs attached to the lower solenoid.
I have a 50 hp lower unit and the one I just bought on Ebay that have a different style which basically looks like a small shift rod inside of a longer shift rod.

Can anyone tell me when they changed?

I believe in preventative maintenance, so when I dropped the lower unit I also inspected the water pump. The impeller on the lower unit has broken a vane, so my question is the impeller is only 8 months so why would it have a broken vane already?

Other than sitting down and looking up all the parts breakdowns, I can't help you. The only thing that doesn't seem correct is that in 1969 I think they had a 55HP not a 60HP.
You might have to start looking at the different parts breakdowns.

The style changed between the 1969 55hp and 1970 60hp gearcases.

Yeah I think that is what i am finding after looking at parts breakdowns and things of that nature. I have got a ton of parts lined up now though three complete lower units all with solenoids that test out at 3.5 ohms. Though the one set is useless to me now.

Now on to the water pump question, did I maybe install the new impeller incorrectly or something to break a vane? Basically put the key in the drive shaft, slid water pump onto the key then slid the cover over top of the pump while rotating the driveshaft?

It just seems unlikely that an 8 month old impeller would break. At the end of last season the engine was running cool and comfortable I would run WOT back to the dock could pull the cowling off and put hand on the block and not have a problem at all (not hot to the touch). I want to do the add a pee stream to it but I am just to much of a pansy to drill into my motor (though I have all the taps and bits) i would be that one idiot that would drill straight through into cylinder 1
