I have a set of these hydrofoil doel fins bolted to the lower leg of my Johnson 3 cylinder 35hp outboard. The boat gets on the plane at around 10 knots. Does anyone think they are a waste of time and slowing me down by causing too much friction in the water or are they a value to the outboard?

Some boats they help and some they hurt. Take them off and give it a try.

The fin will more than likely help your boat plane quicker. As far as slowing you down or not, it depends on your engine height - you want the fin to be out of the water at planing speeds. If it's above the water while on plane it's not hurting top speed.

Hydrofoils help or hinder, depending on how they are rigged.

Outboard has to be rigged high enough so the foil barely touches the water on plane.

Outboard has to be trimmed full in to get on plane and trimmed out to max speed after planing.

Just bolting them on and taking off is likely to produce poor WOT and may actually delay planing.

I think what JB has mentioned is perhaps true.It does take a while to plane. Will try without them.
