I have a 5.0 Lt Volvo Gi with SX Drive system.
I was thinking of installing one of those hydrofoils on my outdrive.
Does anyone have any experience with this.
The manufacturers claim better fule economy, holeshot, etc.
thanks for your input

Re: Hydrofoil Question

Majorly cussed and discusssed here. Do a search in the Boat Section. Very recent thread covers this topic in detail. Good luck. BTW, I vote no . . . (Sorry all, couldn't help it)

Re: Hydrofoil Question

The foils can work real well and I have had good success with 2 different type boats, but if I had it to do today it would be some sort of tabs.
Your might be better off useing something like smart tabs. They improve hole shot, ride and handling.Stay on plane with less power and reduce no wake speed wander.

Re: Hydrofoil Question

I have a 18' Bayliner Capri with a 88 HP outboard, with a hydrofoil. I installed the hydrofoil after taking it on the lake the first time. The engine did fine without it, but the foil made a huge difference. Out of the hole, the boat is much faster. It gets on plane in about half the time. However, the most prominent difference came at speed. No porpoising whatsoever. Before, my boat would porpoise at about 40 MPH. Not anymore. It really didnt do much for my fuel economy like they promise, but hell! Everything else came true. For the 40 bucks I spent on my Attwood hydrofoil, how can I complain? Trim tabs are certainly a better option, but require drilling your hull in many cases, which is something I don't like the idea of.
