hi, I just changed the gearbox seals on
my 1969 85hp hydrolic gearbox.
the local marine shop was out of stock of the
correct evinrude oil but they assured me it's ok to run auto transmission fluid in this gearbox.

I would normally wait and get the propper stuff,
but its 9pm now and i was hoping to go fishing in 8 hrs

i'm no expert and i dont have much faith in the shop assistant. Does anyone know about this?
Thanks

69 85 should be hydro-electric. dont use atf. use the correct type C. gears and pumps are getting harder to find for those old motors.
good luck and keep posting

"Dextron" ATF is recommended in the factory manual.

ledgefinder,
Would you mind quoting the specific mention of that, or better yet link to a scanned copy or something? The lubes ARE similar, though the Type C (aka Premium Blend) may be a lot better at dealing with the inevitable water intrusion or something. At least I had hoped so given the price of the stuff. I've always heard this as anecdotal- never have I heard until now that there may be an official OMC approval for using ATF?

Dexron is hard to find these days. Is it reformulated & given the name Dexron/Mercon now that Ford has abandoned their type F in favor of the Dexron (except for power steering which may still use type F in many cases). Anyone know for sure what changes really happened with the formulation?

Re: hydrolic gearbox oil alternatives ?

I went to another marine dealer who had the correct evinrude lube. I Spoke to the mechanic there who said he had seen quite a few old evenrudes running ATF but he would not recomend using it. apparantly it eats out the solonoid and brass componants of the gearbox (long term use ).
I dont think i would have any problems using it as a stop gap or for testing rebuilds for leaks.
$5.00 of ATF waisted or $30 of evenrude lube -
I also asked if i could look at his factory work shop manual to check out what oil is recomended.
No go, the motor is too old for them to service or hold any info on.
