Hydrolocked Volvo 5.7 yesterday. water in all cylinders. Pulled plugs and cleared but sounds like flywheel damaged due to trying to crank several times before someone realized that engine was hydrolocked.

Could the flywheel be damaged or just the starter or both? Make gosh-awful noise when trying to crank, will turn over then squeal and grind when it hits what I assume are the missing teeth on the flywheel.

Anything else I am missing?

Help!
FH

Pull the plugs and see if you can someway turn the motor over with a breaker bar (have to remove some pulleys and belts )...hydrolocking while running will bend a rod easy, and if you can get it turned over by hand, then you can start with the flywheel

Yes, you could break some teath off the ring gear on the flywheel. Usually the starter breaks before the ring gear. If you have room, pull the starter and look at the teath on the ring gear and turn the engine over slowly by hand so you can see (Or feel if necessary) all the teath.

A flexible mirror could be of great assitance.

Agree with the broken teeth. This happened to me 2 years ago...hydrolock, then a 'mechanic' came aboard and tried to start it a few times. Back at the shop they showed me the flywheel had large sections of teeth missing from where he tried to get it going.
