I have a Hydro Now as I change my lower unit.
I had a 1979 70 HP Johnson this one broke. I changed to a 1973 70HP Johnson. This unit sat in a garage for 2 years with very little lube now the unit is hard to shift. Any helps on this Please. Do you think I can work out the stiffness by shifting?

One more thing when I do shift this lower the prop has about a 1/4 turn play in the reverse direction. Is this normal ?

Re: Hydromechanical shift

I'm betting the drag you're feeling is the water pump impeller - plenty dry after the years, dragging on the housing. The play you've noted in the prop is the gap between the lugs on the clutch dog hitting the mating lugs on the gears - completely normal.
- Scott
