I finally received the hydraulic steering setup I have been (im)patiently waiting for the last 14 days (thanks USPS)

The setup I purchased included a Hynautic helm pump and resevoir with a SeaStar cylinder HC5345. I have (2) SeaStar hydraulic hoses that will run from the resivoir to the cylinder; my question is, can I use a regular hydraulic hose setup from the helm pump to the resevoir?

The SeaStar hoses are mucho dinero, and a standard set of hoses I can pick up locally are not only less expensive, they have a higher psi rating. I personally cannot see any reason not to pick up the hoses locally... Any thoughts?

I Believe you can use Nylon or better Tubing for that Line......
It's a Low Pressure System between the Resevoir,+ the Helm......

Re: Hynautic and SeaStar Steering Install

Thanks Bond-o, I went and had a couple of hoses made at Goodyear today. Got the main lines run below-deck to the stern, mounted the hydraulic cylinder on the outboard, mounted the helm pump; now I just have to mount the resevoir and hook up all of the lines.

Then there is the matter of the large space under my console where my aluminum fuel tank used to be... :'(

Does anything ever go perfectly smoothly with a boat???

Found a Moeller that is slightly smaller than the aluminum tank that came out. It's about two inches narrower, and four inches longer. That means it will go back a little more into my dry hold, and I'll have to secure it so there isn't any sliding side-to-side. Supposed to be here tomorrow, which would mean... Look out Pompano!!!

The steering system is now installed and purged... It works!!! It is a used system I picked up on eBay, but seems to work flawlessly. I had to have a couple of hoses made; but all in all, I have a hydraulic steering system complete that I have about $350 invested in. Granted my shoes now smell like steering fluid!

Now I am waiting on my new fuel tank so I can test the steering out in the water; I can't wait to see the results. With my old cable system, the 150HP V-6 took some muscle to steer when I had several people on board. I'm hoping for some easier steering.

I put my Baystar system in 2 weeks ago. Everything went smoothly except that fluid is a lot thinner than I'm used to. Bit of a clean up job.
