I'm currently building a boat with twin 2003 4-stroke 70hp Johnsons and decided to go with hydraulic steering. I bought a HC5358 cylinder and the tie bar kit, which is what Teleflex recommends for my engines, and got a Hynautic H51 helm off ebay. Only when I recieved the helm did I discover that there are 3 fittings on the back, and further research tells me one is for a reservoir. So I have a couple of questions:
Is the reservoir required for this setup? It seems to me that a correctly purged system wouldn't need any more fluid than what is in the lines and cylinder.
Will the hynautic H51 work with the HC5358 cylinder?
I'm going to have lines built at a local hydraulic shop that does stainless fittings, so they can easily make a line to go from the hynautic fitting to the seastar fitting.
Thanks,
Eric

All hydraulic systems have resevoirs to accomodate expansion and contraction etc. You could fabricate a small one quite easily from a small plastic bottle etc. Why would you buy a hynautic pump to fit your seastar steering?

BTW the newer seastar systems have built in resevoirs.

The price was right. Do you know the aprroximate volume of the hynautic reservoir?

I thought about jury rigging it with a couple relief valves adjusted to 950psi and a plastic tank, but on second thought I don't want all that junk under my dash. I'll just bite the bullet and get a nice new seastar helm.
So much for my great deal.. :p
Thanks for your input,
Eric
