" <br />Not Quite........ <br />All Distributors Must be Vented........<br />Without vents the Ionized Gases, from all the sparks, couldn't escape.........And the dist. will cease to function.....<br />But, Marine Dist. vents Are Sheilded, ei; with the use of Screens,+ Elbows(Sparks Can't flash Around Corners)<br />Pretty much like the Marine Alt., There's Alot of sparking going on in an Alt., or a Starter.....<br />Alt.s are shielded by Screens.....<br />Starters have a Shielding Plate, added between the starter motor,+ the bendix drive.....<br /><br />DJ, You're No Doubt Right about many of these various engines....<br />But, In My Experince, GM motors from the early 80s to present, Are Production Pick-up engines..... Brass freeze-plugs, Maybe a different cam(thou I Doubt it).....<br />Still just a Cast-Piston, 2 bolt main block(No difference in the Metalurgy)....<br /><br />The Absolute Best Reference books on the market, are the 1s by Dennis Moore.....<br />"Small-Block Chevy Marine Performance",+<br />"Big-Block Chevy Marine Performance"<br />He debunks All the Myths..........

hello<br /> this whole post emphasizes why i will only use oem or the oem equivalent in repairs. if my customers take the motor to the west coast and have a problem any dealer can repair it with the factory parts guide. I dont frankenrig. trust me if you build a franken rig and have a problem 200 miles away you may or may not remember what parts you need or the next tech may not realize its been frankenrigged and do something wrong. spend the moneey and do thr job right one time and life is easy.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Hey genius, how do you expect any of the knowledgable guys on this forum to help you after a post like that! The whole thread is about the dangers of non marine parts, do you think everyone is being hoodwinked? Rubbish. A boat is a bathtub, add fuel into the bilge and you've got a WMD. Boats explode, it happens, I've seen it and I'm sure others here have also seen it. Anything that reduces or eliminates an ignition source is a good thing whether its regulation or not. Aldo

He must be the previous owner of my boat. After purchase, I received a stack of receipts in the mail from "Bubba"...and almost EVERY one was from NAPA Auto Parts! I examined the parts personally. None of the parts indicate "marine" or "USCG approved". The alternator is definietly automotive, as well as the starter. I will soon take apart the water pump to examine the impeller, but based on the amount of rust, I think it's safe to assume it is automotive. The carburetor is lacking J-tubes and has many blocked-off vacuum ports. Cross-referencing on the Holley website indicates "automotive". The fuel pump, labeled "Carter", is lacking any venting ports.<br /><br />On several of the receipts, they printed the "application". Application reads: 1970 Corvette...<br /><br />D. Hi Walt This why I stop coming to this site. It like beating your head against a stone wall. I admire the guys who try to help and stick it out. I love the guy who begs for information and a month later he is the expert giving advice, BUT never really go it to begin with. The miss information would drive me nuts I have enough of that at my own shop. This thread is a perfect example of why I left. Its doesn't matter weather its a marine part or not. Have a fire marshal investagate you then you will change you tune. Keep up the good work Walt. I dont know how you do it. PS. There is no problems with water coming in the the exhaust either. We see four engines a week with reversation problems. I do like the new style gen engines You can have them to the crank in an hour. Heads off in 30 minutes.

When you have actually, personally, experienced an onboard explosion, you become VERY aware of parts' suitaibility for the use.<br /><br />Been there, done that! Less than 10 minutes to remove at boat completely from the surface.<br /><br />Such nasty things can happen even on a 100% oem marine maintained vessel, so who would take the chance with not-all-marine parts? <br /><br />Only those who 'think' they know..

As a manufacture of trim tabs we do not have the problem of "automotive vs marine", but let me give you some insite regarding why a manufacture of an automotive part would not simply lable it Marine for increased margin.<br /><br />1) assuming the manufacturer is responsible - there is a moral obligation. Sounds nieve but I still like to think that we have some honest people in this world.<br />OK you skeptics don't buy that!<br />2) Product liability! from two view points -<br />a) cost of and ability to acquire liability insurance depends on your record of claims.<br />b) One law suite that indicated liability and fraud would not only cost the company mega bucks, but all of their major customers, since they would not be able to get insurance.<br />3) Larger public companies are larger targets and therefore not only have more to loose but tend to lead the industry in design and safety as a means of helping the industry grow. A free and competetive market place makes everyone else step up to the plate as well.<br />4) marine parts usualy cost more simply because they are not produced in the same volume as automotive parts. Keep in mind the Camero was discontinued because sales fell below 50,000 units per year. Bayliner is the largest volume boat builder with average annual volume well under 50,000 unit of ALL models and sizes. Low volume means higher prices. Fact.<br /><br />If you want to use an automotive rebuilt starter on your boat to save a few bucks do us and your family a favor (you probably used automotive gass line too) don't invite us for a ride. <br /><br />As for the Mod's there is one more issue - if they pipe in with oppinions they can be percieved to be the guru's and that is not their job. They are also not the supreme court justices that deside who's opinion is valid. We can leave that to the polititions and the courts. I personally think that they are giving of themselves to make this site a great means of communication for something we all love - boating! They deserve our thanks and understanding.<br /><br />There are many individuals who believe their opinion is valid regardless of their knowledge or experience - some have none of either. I have an old friend that always said that he was most opinionated when he knew very little about the topic. <br /><br />My simple suggestion to everyone is to post answers and opinions based on experience and knowledge, otherwise help find the solution or be quite.<br /><br />These forumes are as good as we all make them, and I think they are among the best.

To all those "Knowledgable" folks; when I first joined this site and answered some of the posts, you disagreed with my info and, although I backed up my advice with book references and page numbers (burned pistons due to wrong octane level for example) you found it necessary to disagree by using veiled insults, never once referencing your responses. Eventually I quit responding to the posts because people like Dieselwalt, Bondo, and a few others believe only their opinions are worthy of consideration, trading barbs back and forth with anyone who "dared to challenge" their intellectual and technical prowess. I don't blame those who have become discouraged with this forum because often times it's merely an outlet for those with a greater ego than common sense.<br />For the moderator; all advice is a product of someones response to a problem they encountered, either positive or negative. The recepient has the option of following the recommendations or not. However, if a person can't back up their council with page and reference as proof, they need to keep their comments to themselves. The moderator isn't responsible for what is said here, the subscribers are.<br />To conclude; act more like gentlemen, be constructive, give good advice, pass along praise, or don't say anything.

This is a discussion board and people of all walks of life discuss topics and issues. Some recommendations come from actual hands on experience ...and others from what they heard from their other cousin Bob who heard it from his other brother Billy-Bob.<br /><br />If you give a subject long enough time, you can quickly spot the Billy-Bobs from the skilled mechanics. Moderators don't need to jump in on stupid advise because experienced members will immediately pickup on any BS being written here and correct them.<br /><br />I have asked my share of questions on automotive parts on marine engines. In summary, for the most part, it's a real bad idea to use them.<br /> <br />However, the questions need to be asked and the discussions must take place so that we can all learn from each other.<br /><br />I have learned quite a bit from this forum and am glad that we have experienced members like Bondo and DieselWalt on board. If you don't like the advise or comments being made, lighten up and get on with it!
