Okay, i hope i can get some answers here. I have a 1968 f-22m johnson 20 hp outboard. Just put in a new flywheel key(before anyone asked the reason the old one was sheared was my own doing). I am having starting problems. Hes is what i ahve done so far to fix my problem:

First off its been 3 years since i had tried to use the motor

I got fresh fuel this year, put in my stabilzer, the fuel is a 50:1 mix.

I flushed out the fuel lines all the way to the carb. removed the the carb, but not the fuel bowl and forced some fresh fuel into it.

MY point gap is .020, i checked it to make sure it hadnt changed. The motor ran 3 years ago thats the last time i had set them.

installed new plugs, champion j4c,

Nows here where i might be having the isues but not sure, when i put my meter on each plug boot and touch the other side to ground the top coil pak gives me a reading of 2.2 to 4 volts when i pull the starter rope. The bottom coil pak gives more of a soild reading of 5.4 volts. Not sure if that is correct. i ohmed out the coil paks, they gave me a reading of 6k. i read somewhere that as long as i was 3 to 15 k then the coils are fine. i was planning on leaving for vacation tommorrow, but not unless i have the boat. its is cruical for me to camp with the boat:confused::mad: HELP:redface:

Its common that the float in the carbs will stick closed if it sets up for a while.....if its firing ok then its a fuel problem........I would clean the carbs.........

Hi third. Cool motor you got there. I have a '66 20 hp myself. Here's a great link that can walk you through a tune up from top to bottom. While you may not have time to rebuild the carb before you trip, I would take it apart and clean it thoroughly with some aerosol carb cleaner. You can then give it a proper rebuild when you get back. While you're at it, pick up a spark plug gap tester too. Your spark should be able to jump a 1/4" gap with ease. You should also run Champion J6C plugs as well, rather than the current J4Cs you are using. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

What in the world??? thirdtimes, what kind of meter are you trying to check the coil output with? Unless you have something that will check the peak reading in thousands of volts, you are making meaningless tests. I'm surprised you haven't blown your voltmeter. Those coils put out somewhere in the 30,000 - 40,000 volt range. There is such a thing as instruments that can measure it, but not found in the common home workshop.

Coil output generally is done by a spark test. Rig up a 1/4" air gap and see if a spark will jump it.

BTW, I don't know if you have a carburetor problem or not, but you can clean it till doomsday comes and it won't fix a lack of spark.

Thanks guys for just remindering me what i already knew(or should've known). Went back in and checked the points and sure enough they were just dirty enough to give me fits. ALso one of the sets of points was just a hair out of adjustment. I used my son for the spark test(lol my dad did it to me so i thought i would pass it down). He is a good tester. He will let you know if ya got fire. He is 12 by the way. Anyway put it all back togerther and gave it a pull it fired right up. Got lucky didnt have to touch the carb again.:D
