Re: I am now officially poor.

I wish more people would learn to experience that kind of living...today, the poor have satellite, internet and cell phone bills, and receive food stamps, housing assistance and more back in tax returns than they've paid in 5 years or more. This country as a whole ( gov't particularly ) needs to relearn a little something we used to call "self reliance".

I dread doing my taxes this year, but I dread doing my taxes NEXT year, not to mention watching my paychecks get eaten up by NEW taxes NEXT year.

It's taken me a while to figure it out, but at least I have a PLAN, instead of waiting for someone to bail me out.

John, after reading your story I just had to look up Isanti on Google Earth...I mean, 7 kids, and a cow in todays world!!
I'm not doubting you, as in our world, the 'baby boomers' were all raised similar.
I did see that most of the houses in the town seem to be on about 'quarter acre sections', so you are not short on 'space'.

T2F. I am trying to calculate how I can do similar. It is letting go that's the hard part, especially when no one can run the outfit as well as me!!

Cheers

3 1/2 miles east of Isanti on co rd 55. 20 acre lot.

Have a small barn, raised one dairy cow, a steer or 2 a year, a few laying hens, and usually 50 meat chickens a year. Tapped maple trees, grew at least 1/2 acre of garden, with many years of a couple of acres of sweet corn for market. Get some venison every year, usually with a gun, but road kill works if you get it soon enough. Fish, of course, with about a dozen fishable lakes within 20 miles of here.

Raised the big family in a 750 sq ft (plus basement and loft) house. When the father in law needed a senior care apartment, he gave us funds to add on a 20 x 30, 2 story addition, which actually expanded living space about 1500 feet. Pretty empty now, but with the way things are going on, we might wind up with extended family back on the home 20.

Oh, and I have 9 kids. I had 7 at the time.

John.
Think I have got close to you...head E, thru the intersection, and somewhere around the next road off to the right.
The map makes is seem 'brown', but the picture 'Sunset over Sandbrook in Isanti", on your road, gives it all meaning. Looks very nice and green.
I agree, you can live comfortably off 20 acres, because 20 acres is enough to grow more protien than a family needs, and produce cash crops.
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed it.
Oh, by the way....no power out there John?...just wondered....you know, 9 kids, no TV.
Cheers

Re: I am now officially poor.

I did a rough draft for my 2009 Taxes and discovered that I am officially poor. My Federal Tax liability was ZERO!!!!! Wow, it really does "pay" not to work for a living. Zero federal taxes. :D

THE POVERTY LEVEL FOR FAMILY OF TWO IS $14,500

With just my wife and myself and an adjusted gross income of less than $9,000.00 we are now poor.
Since I am now "officially poor" don't I qualify for a new Cadillac or something?

Where do I go to get the free cheese, utility bill assistance,Section-8 housing assistance and my new LCD television etc.

This is first year since I was 11 years old that I didn't receive a W-2. All income is from dividends, interest, and capital gains.

I don't mean to belittle others out there that are struggling with their bills and having a rough time. Just accept this post for the jest that I mean it to be.

I can stay "poor" as long as my 401-K and savings accounts can continue to diminish each year. I haven't touched the 401K/IRA yet. We're still living off our savings. It helps to have all property and vehicles, etc paid for.

Oh, I sold my Mercury Mountaineer the other day and that helped to pay for a medical bill I just received for services back in August 2008! I've still got a little left over for my annual spring trip to Lake Barkley,KY for a week and all the excursions to the Ohio river by McAlpine dam in Louisville,KY

However, I will gladly accept any and all contributions to the
AID TO TYME2FISH FISHING FUND FOR 2010

Its my last year to be rich also, SS starts for Wife this Mo.:)

Re: I am now officially poor.

We filed taxes and our reportable income was 14k last year. I am poor, but i know that there are people out there far worse than i am. I have a roof, food, bills paid, a jeep to drive.

I know people who don't have any of these things, and living on the streets. I am very thankful for the thing's i do have, and I know I have nothing to complain about.
