My 87 electric start 25hp evinrude still wont start. I just installed the carb rebuild kit with new needle and seat and i adjusted the float. It still does the same thing its been doing for 3 weeks. It shutters and puts out white smoke and now it backfires a lot and the plugs are wet every time i pull them. Ive tried 2 different sets of plugs with no difference. The engine fired right up when i bought it and then 2 weeks later i tried to start it and have been trying to get it started for about a month now and i am pissed beyond belief about this whole thing. Im assuming the engine is getting way too much fuel and i cant figure out why. adjusting the needle does nothing to help.

before you bury it in the back yard and hope a tree grows, if youve done all you can then there is shame in taking it in to a mechanic and having some one trained to work on it take a stab at it.
in the long run you will save a little hair and maybe a blood vessel or two. then you can enjoy it.
I played with mine for a month before i took it in, runs like a charm now, and didnt cost as much as i was expecting.

does the backfiring normally come from too much fuel or poor timing? I don't know how to check the timing but it really seems like a timing issue to me. although i don't know how the timing would just get thrown off over night.

Well, it's a good thing you came here and even, before you take it to a mechanic and spend bookoo bucks, there is plenty of expert help here who blogs daily. Since you have rebuilt your carb, the ignition system is a good place to start next. A 1987 25hp motor is still relatively new and has many years of service left in it. I would suggest getting a 12 pack of your favorite beer and taking a breather. Help will come alog and get you back in business and you'll be glad you saved it.:D It's pretty rewarding when you get a problem like this solved, but then you might kick yourself, when you find out how simple it was......but yea, check your ignition system over. You may have some issues with your coils. Remove the magneto plate and clean it all up nice and check everything over. I bet once you restore your mag plate, it'll run like a champ.

I was having a similar problem with the wet plugs and all on my '75 Rude. Ended up being a power pack. Do a full ignition system check on it (timer base, power pack(s) and coils). Most likely something isnt good in that system. Remember, an engine needs FUEL (handled) AIR (almost a given) and SPARK to run.

Backfiring may be the result of a sheared flywheel key. That can happen in about half a second, if the flywheel was not torqued down correctly...

Its ALIVE!!!! pulled the spark plug wires off the power packs and cleaned off the terminals. I guess when i was checking the spark it was twisting the wires and getting a good connection but when they were laying naturally they were shorting. 3 weekends of fishing missed over that crap!

I had the same engine, manual start, for 16 years of dependable service in salt water. I sold it with 2000 hours on it, it's still running great for the guy who bought it from me. Truly a fantastic motor.

There ya go.....I knew that if you clean up the ignition system, she'll spring back to life. Glad to hear that it's alive again. Happy boating.

Good to know... it is definitely a well build engine aside from the position of the starter motor and disassembly it takes to get the carb off. Now i can't get the foot off to replace the water pump impeller.

make sure you disconnect the shift rod linkage, and ensure that you have all the bolts out of it, there is usually one hiding up under the trim tab (if your motor has one)
