Re: I Blew It. (It's okay to laugh.)

Thanks for all the inquiries. Maybe Youtube is the way to go since I looked at the rules for posting here and couldn't find a section on videos.

I'll work on getting a Youtube deal up. Plus, I have another chapter to add: I bought a donor engine where the powerhead was claimed to be good and put the engine back together myself. I started it today and she idled beautifully. I gassed the throttle once and it revved fine. I didn't want to do too much since it was on the muffs and I'm not sure where the water is supposed to be coming out of the engine.

Challenges included that the donor engine was a '71 electric shift and my engine is a '75 manual shift, so I had to fabricate a housing for the linkage (not a big deal since the boss was there already - just an issue because I didn't notice until the powerhead was already on). Had to take it back off.

And the '75 had a block-mounted fuel pump while the '71 gets its signal from the intake plate. I used the gasket as a template and drilled a hole, pressed the fitting in and sealed it.

I think I'll look for a local pro who can double check my work and verify that I'm ready for a try in the water.

Thanks to all those who gave suggestion and advice.

at least it was on the trailer in the yard, not in the middle of the lake by yourself! my 75hp merc did the same thing in the middle of the lake. we learned how to sail a 16' boat with a bimini top lol.

The muffs were on the motor, but was the water turned on? I couldn't see any coming out in the video.

Yep, water was on.
I'm going to replace the water pump and try it out soon.

ok im going to be the one to ask the question!you do know that these motors are 2 stroke correct and require oil to be added to the gas?the reason i asked is you,d be surprised how many new boaters get a motor ,add gas and go ,not very far, as they assume their 4 strokes!i got a beautiful 5 1/2 1956 johnny that a older gentelmen lent to his grandchildren that met that exact fate.

Based on the smoke I saw on the video I would say he had oil mixed with the gas.

i would think so also but could also indicate imminent destruction.i didnt see the vid first but based on his age id say your right ,i have found that most of the no oil boo-boo,s were done by 20 somethings though thats not always true.

Yes, oil was in the fuel. (Two of our three snowmobiles are two-stroke so I'm aware that oil must be part of the fuel equation for two-strokes.) I've replaced the powerhead with one from a '71 so I had to modify some things to adapt it to the '75 manual shift. I've started it and it runs fine, but I'm now doing things like securing the solenoid. Hopefully, I'll be getting it - and not me - wet soon.

And sorry to hear about the Merc in the middle of the lake. That must have been miserable.

Went for a test ride tonight. Motor ran strong, boat was fine. It wouldn't idle once it was hot. I have the low speed jets turned all the way in and then out 1.5 turns. (I know this isn't the right spot, but I'd like to ask if that's about what you guys have on a 50 hp '75 Johnson 50ESL75B.) If my question causes deletion of the post, please accept my apology for posting in the wrong area.

Yes, hose was on. Thanks for asking. Thinking cap was off when I tried to do a quick fix on the soft floor in the bow area. I'm not really a hack, but I wasn't paying attention to how much room I had and drilled six beautiful holes right through the hull. (It's okay to laugh at that too. I am. At least now I am.) I looked at all the fiberglass repair products then called a friend who is a boat mechanic. He suggested Kitty Hair for the 1/16" holes I made. I bought a similar Bondo product that has the fiberglass strands in it. I sealed them with two layers of repair material at 5 pm and we were boating before 8 pm. I think some hull flex caused another screw head to crack the gel coat, so I've got another to do. (Screw head broke off during removal, so it might be a little involved or similar to the ones I've repaired already.) Man, I'm glad I bought a $500 boat to use for these mistakes.

You just made a 500 dollar boat worth about 200 bucks. I can say that you are definitely still in the learning curve. Wow. If I had that kind of luck with a boat I'd sell it! LOL
