I decided the news deserved a new post instead of adding to this one: ;)
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=473169

I checked the boat out earlier this week and it looked in great shape for its age- I think it'll clean up real nice. So I got a water trial yesterday, and that sealed the deal! I put down a deposit, and will probably pick it up Sunday.

One concern- It stalled out twice after starting, and bogged down a little when giving it gas at first, but it ran really strong after warming up. Got out of the hole good and handled really smooth. the roughness at first could be that it was really cold yesterday, plus the guy said the gas was from last year and he didn't get around to adding stabil until January. And the engine could use a general tune-up- he said he didn't take it out too much last year.

Another concern was that both times I checked out the boat he had to jump the battery to get it started. He said it was because his daughters played with the switches and left the boat lights or radio on, which I was skeptical of. But he said he would have the battery checked and replaced if it was bad, and if there turned out to be an unexplained draw on the battery he would check out the electrical.

Eh, I figure for $2000 I can't really go wrong. I could spend 4 times that for a newer boat and have problems. I think the boat is in good shape structurally and mechanically, and the guy I'm buying it from seems like a good, honest guy.

Got a lot to learn-- this is my second boat, but my first I/O. Figure I'll take it to a shop for a look-over and tune up to start with, and do my homework on I/O maintenance-- look up the stickies for my engine and outdrive on here. Anybody got any tips for me starting out, feel free to share!

Looking forward to some tubing with the wife and kids this summer!

Common for kids to play in the boat and leave something on and ruin the battery.. Disconnect it if you can't keep em out..
Time to go shopping for new gear.. Anchors, plenty ropes, fenders, first aid kit, marine fire extinguisher, set of muffs, plugs for the drain, life jackets, throw-able PFD and flares.. It's my favorite shopping.. Boat stuff shopping..:D

You had a outboard before? You have to enjoy maintenance to have a I/O.. It's not tough, but not the same as the "bam hit the key" of a outboard.. I love my I/O.. Lots of power, quite, no smell and great on fuel.. Many times.. I have missed my outboards.. I never worked on any of them I can think of as much as I do just doing I/O maintenance and replacements.. Get a service manual.. Because after the shop rapes ya:eek:.. You will try to do as much as you can yourself..:D

Thanks for the tips Joshua! Yeah, I still have my outboard boat, although my wife tells me I need to sell it now...like you said, I'm going to miss that old outboard too... :(

So I have most of the gear I need. But yes, getting the service manual will definitely be high on the list. Owning a boat with a '72 outboard, I got pretty handy with fixing stuff, but I/O is a whole new can of worms (can of bait?).

I would expect to buy a new battery and add some SeaFoam to the tank to help clean everything out. Chances are that if he left the fuel in without stabil I'll bet he left the battery in without a tender... Marine Batteries should not be allowed to sit dead... So Buy a can of SeaFoam and a battery... Enjoy.

Thanks! the seafoam is a good call, will definitely do that.

I just got a call from the guy- he had the battery tested and it was marginal, so he bought a new one for the boat! Cool dude.
