I have a 1975 85hp mercury. I had to get a new lower unit because mine froze and cracked the housing. I bought a new one and now I can not get the shift rod lined up.

follow the shift shaft down from the top of motor you can hold it in place or move it around a bit down by the reverse lock rod to line it up .when it's right it will come together with hand hand pressure. grease the splines
