You'll be happier doing all 3, plus, when you're finished, you'll have practically a new motor which will be ready to serve you for years to come. Don't forgot proper break-in procedures when she's all back together.

Rebuild the carburetors or you may get to do this entire process over again. Lean fuel mixtures due to clogged/partially clogged passages are more to blame for engine failures than anything else. Most outboards don't wear out -- their owners and prior owners kill them.

UPDATE: I can't believe this happened (photos attached)

UPDATE: I can't believe this happened (photos attached)

ok guys I eventually got the pistons out , you wouldn't believe the trouble i had , all because I couldn't get my hands on a thin wall 5/16 socket ! tried local garages and all my mates but not one to be found.. had to get off flea bay eventually.... any way have them out and I'm a bit shocked at the damage and the crank has rusting on it too.

The bearing on the damaged piston was totally fried , was this due to the heat??

piston damage 004.jpgpiston damage 003.jpgpiston damage 002.jpgpiston damage 001.jpg

I would really like to keep the crank as it'll be damn expensive to replace it over here..
COuld someone also help to name the bearings?

one on top i presume is the top end ?
one on bottom big end?
cage bearing is in the end of the con rod?
other 2 on the shaft I can't think of....

#2 and #3 cylinders are scored only slightly but still have to be done,
if the crank news from you guys comes back ok the plan is

to have the head rebored to machine shop recommandations
plane the head as there is slight notching to it
replace Piston kits with Wiseco ones ? ok to use these i hope as they are the cheapest to ship over here.
replace all bearings or not?? I suppose once this far I will do them all It's just the cost over here is over budget but if I really have to then I will.

Okay, that will need to come off so we can see what the journal is like, do you have an engine shop in mind yet? Take it there if you dont feel confident about removing it......hopefully you dont have a new doorstop.

Mark now you've got me worried... I'll tap it off and post photos in a bit...
on another note.. should I leave the rods and bearings and all soaking in something just in case?? maybe oil or diesel?

Be careful not to mark the journal if you decide to give it go.....

In case of what? Just keep them clean and dry at this stage, light coating of lube wouldnt hurt though.

Re: UPDATE: I can't believe this happened (photos attached)

Only mentioned it in case they rust as it will be sometime 3-4 weeks before my pistons get here. Brought the engine to where I'll get the reboring done and I'll have to get the 0.030 size.

Any way I tried to take photos of the journal and these are the best i could get hope it helps. It looks dull but maybe just a quick polish with an emery board will do.

pics are bad only looking a them now sorry

Chinewalker , by round do I take it that if it's slightly not then I'm in trouble?

Does it look like lack of lube that caused that piston to fail or something else??

Not looking good, if the journal looks anything like the inside of that retainer in the first pic id say its junk as it stands, may still be a candidate for repair though, the rest of the pics are inconclusive .....if the journal has no gouging, marking or pitting that you can feel with your fingernail and its just dull you might be okay. It will need to be miked up for size and out of round, the dimension of that journal should be 1.1825in, not sure how much tolerance is allowed, you will need to check a manual for that.

A micrometer.... Check the diameter at several points to check that it is the same all the way arond, and top to bottom of the journal.

Check carefully for pitting, too, as it looks like that's the journal that was "stuck" when you started this whole odyssey, and there is evidence of rust around it.

A micrometre it is (thanks chinewalker)......see if you can get your hands on a digital readout type preferably, the older ones without can be tricky to read if you dont use them all the time.....you also need to make sure its the correct size for the diametre you want to measure eg. 1 to 2in range.

Based on my vast amount of inexperience I would say you are in over your head and you need to cut your losses. I suggest you dismantle your motor and sell your good parts on craigslist or ebay. I think you may be surprised at how much you can get. In the meantime (if you can afford it) go out and get yourself another motor.

Couldn't disagree more. I've been following this thread and I think fishfeatures is doing a fine job.

Re: I can't believe this happened

ward cleaver as good as that sounds and as much as I would like to I can't.

1. good second hand motors here are hard to come by and I ain't buying somone elses troubles which is all that semms to be got ( trust me i know people who have bought and sold crap motors recently because demand dictates)
2.even if i do find a good second hand motor it'll be in the region of ? 1600 at least
3. My accountant ( the lovely Mrs Fishfeatures) reckons that in this financial downturn at the moment I can't afford another motor
4. This has now become my nemesis and it will not defeat me...:D a good manual and all the helpful info found here and great advice from the guys here will see me through....as I see it all it costs is my time and few parts. the time I can give it and the parts can be found on that great thing called the world wide web. Worst case senario and i have part it out as a last resort all that it has done is kept me and my hard earned cash out of the pub and given me a great understanding of how 2 stroke motors work...
5. If I'm succesful at this I have the option of tackling a 60hp 63 evinrude or/and 235hp evinrude for a neighbour, and I'll need a winter project :D

6. My brother gives me his boat if I miss boating so I ain't at a loss..

Ditto. This motor has seen its final days as a complete running engine. Sure, you could rebuild it, rebore all 3 cylinders, get 3 new pistons, new bearings for the crank, new gaskets, new seals, new rings, new... well, basically everything.. But it wont be cheap and I doubt you have the tools or knowledge to rebuild it accurately and pressure test it when done. Cut your losses, sell off the parts, and buy another engine.
