I'm sorry to hear that you've thrown in the towel. This has been a great post for me to read. I've got my 77 85hp Johnson on the bench right now torn apart for a rebuild. Its become clear from my experience and this thread that 2 stroke engines are quite simple but they also are susceptible to a chain reaction of problems when one thing goes wrong. I've owned enough Fords in my life to have to become adept at engine repair and even though this outboard is completely foreign I love having something this simple to work on.

The more minute points in this discussion have certainly helped as I take the pulse of my engine.

One last question maybe someone can help me with.
I found a replacement powerhead on Ebay for less than the cost of redoing my ruined one (inc shipping from USA). Good compression, good cylinders, no sign of salt build up, seems like an ok buy.
I have it all rigged up and checked timing at the river and it was spot on. Only thing is I can't get the lync and sync right. If i line up the mark on the throttle cam just before it touches the roller as per instruction, then advance to WOT the butterflies don't go fully horizontal. Now if i adjust it so at WOT the butterflies are horizontal then the cam mark will not line up with the roller. I have tried everything and am just short of shortening the arm.

Am i wrong somewhere or what can i do to have it close to perfect. All testing was done on the trailer as I want everything to be spot on before I take it for a trip. Lync n sync is the last thing i have to do so am kinda hoping someone can help me out.

confirm the roller is actually the correct roller and not a piece of plastic tubing someone put on there as a roller like someone did with the motor i bought ( good thing i noticed that before running her ), and there should be an adjustment on the shaft where the roller is to adjust the position of the roller to the throttle shaft, improper lync and sync will toast a motor, possibly what killed your old motor

also follow the sync instructions in the repair manual, i believe it says to set and test in water, you will need a timing light

Was set in the water on the trailer, and have a timing light ..

I'll check the roller later on , what should the correct roller look like ?
there is an adjustment on the both the shaft and at the roller but neither will line up as per manual....

ok had a look at the roller and it is just like the one here.


Now do I need to have that sleeve over the roller ? will removing it help Lync n sync of carbs?
