I'm sorry to hear that you've thrown in the towel. This has been a great post for me to read. I've got my 77 85hp Johnson on the bench right now torn apart for a rebuild. Its become clear from my experience and this thread that 2 stroke engines are quite simple but they also are susceptible to a chain reaction of problems when one thing goes wrong. I've owned enough Fords in my life to have to become adept at engine repair and even though this outboard is completely foreign I love having something this simple to work on.
The more minute points in this discussion have certainly helped as I take the pulse of my engine.
