I can't figure out what I broke

I finally got all of the little issues worked out on the motor, it is a Merc 120. It was doing well out of the hole. The only thing that really needed to be taken care of next was the prop. It has seen better days.

My buddy and I went out this morning to do a little wakeboarding the boat is running well. we decided to take off down the river for a bit and as we were doing about 35mph, the boat just lost all power. The rpms went through the roof, but the boat didn't go anywhere. We had to drive the boat back to the ramp whiche was about 3 miles going about 4mph. I could push the throttle down all the way and we wouldn't go anywhere. Like we were just spinning out, but we were on water so that wasn't possible.

I am guessing there is something wrong in my lower unit, but has anyone ever had this happen to them? I am hoping it is something that I can fix myself. Any advise is always appreciated.

So the hub would actually get loose? I guess I need to check that out. What sucks is I just found a guy with an 81 Sea Ray V195 with a brand new mercruiser 350 through a family friend so we just took the boat out today to make sure it ran well so we could sell it.

thanks for the info I will start by checking the hub.

IF the prop hub isn't Slipping,......
The only other thing that will give the syptoms you describe is the Engine Coupler,.........

I Hope it's the Prop........... ;)

Bondos right, you either spun the prop or the coupler

Where is the coupler at? That sounds like I have to take a lof of stuff apart. Oh well I am going to check it out tomorrow. Hopefully if it the prop. I have a feeling that this issue has been building up. During the last few times out on the boat the rpms seem to be climbing more each time we go to a cruising speed.

The Coupler,..... Couples the Engine to the Drive,........
It's bolted to the Flywheel of the motor,+ the Drive Inputshaft slides Into It's Splines........

Ayuh,............
It's a "Drive Off",+ "Engine Out" Operation...........

I did mine, by Myself in a shop with an overhead crane in a little under 2 hours,.............

But,...... I'm a Mechanic,+ I Designed My boat to be Easy to Work On......... ;)

I would guess that yours would be easy also. I have a 120 and I had mine out in an hour with the drive allready off. Im betting its the prop though

Did this problem happen before prop repair?

If yes....It may be time to "GET-R-DUN". :D

Usually when a coupler goes out on an I/O system you will get a good whif of burning rubber.

I hope its not your coupler.

Yeah no burnin rubber here for sure. Just cruising along after getting pretty good wakeboard session in and all of the sudden woah... RPMs went way up and we slowed down. We were about an hour away from the boat ramp at a walking pace. I had to keep the throttle at about 2000rpms so we could inch our way back.

Well, My $ is on the prop!
This is why you WILL go 'up-stream' next time.

BONDO wrote...
"But,......
