Re: I can't figure what this is?

Your outdrive doesn't look like a Mercruiser, so I may not be able to give accurate information. If your transom is not too rotten, you could use some marine silicone and smear a bead around the joint where the outdrive mounts the transom, that should get you through the season. Do you have water collecting in your bilge?

On my Mercruiser, the outdrive plate has a matching plate inside the boat. 6 bolts squeeze the 2 plates together, if yours has a similar construction, try tightening those bolts.

i've seen the 2 bottom bolts thatsecure the inner and outer transome plates corrode into..one way to check is to simply try to tighten them..they will snap into with very little effort....hope not but worth checking

gspig, the outdrive is a 1985 merc Alpha One and water has been getting in bilge. Should I use silicone or something alittle harder? boatdoc, the two bottom bolts seemed loose 4 turns on left side 8 turns on right. That seems real loose, when I tightened them more of that stuff came running out.

It was just bottom bolts, and should I use silicone? i've always been told not to use silicone below water line.

Just a thought, your hoses for your tilt and trim, from the tank, mount on the inside of transom plate have you checked the level? Could be they are leaking where they attach to the manifold and running out the bottom of transom plate.

So many differant possiblities I think the experts need to fix this one, regardless if I figure it out> Its way above level of knowledge, I'm good at diagnosing,(iboats) :D ! I will let the experts fix this one. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I think its water from rotted transom leaking out. From what I understand it can look like oil.

By tightening the bolts, you are squeezing the transom. You said water was getting in, and the bolts were loose. Those are the exact symptoms I had with my rotted transom. Now when you tighten those bolts water oozes, it is coming from the transom wood. You can salvage the rest of this season by running a bead of 5200 silicon around the transom plate. Get it at Wally world in the sporting good section.
