38 years of changin' oil and I ain't come across one I couldn't get off...and never had trouble taking one off that I put on.....then there was the time my brother...who is not patient like me...changed the oil on his '84 Corvette and did not check to see if the gasket came off with the old filter...well....that....was...A MESS.....funny...but a MESS....

Glad you got the old one off. Just follow the advice given and you won't have that problem next time. There are two types of oil filters I hate taking off cars or boats: GM small block, especially marine, in the back of the engine, and filters which sit on top of the mounting plate! What idiot came up with that design! As you loosen it, oil pours out onto your hand and everything else. I've seen remote filter adaptations for Mercruiser which do exactly that. Guaranteed to leave you with a messy bilge and engine. Hy

You mean you don't do what I do and use a plastic bag so that the oil drip go right in there. Cleanest way to do it on my Volvo remote filter.

For filters that are mounted upright, simply punch a small hole in the top of the filter before you remove it. The oil will then drain out of it back through the remote oil lines. After a few minutes, you can then remove it with no mess. ;)

Nice idea, but. Doesn't this allow the dirt caught in the filter to also drain back into the engine? I thought the purpose of changing the filter was to take that dirt away, not allow it back into the engine so it can have it's evil way all over again...

I've been thinking of getting a remote filter mount but I was concerned about the fittings possibly leaking...I'd probably use a Merc one just because of easier availability....for now I am still thin enough and flexible enough to get to the filter on my Four Winns...but for those who have them...ever have any leaks??

My current engine has one as standard... Hate it! Upside down filter. Who's absolutely lunatic idea was that?!?!?!

My previous engine (also a V6) was also a pain to change the filter on. I priced up a Merc genuine... Ouch!! A friend of mine (also a Merc dealer) put me onto a unit that was an adapter that fits in place of the filter, with two nipples and a filter head that you can mount where you like. I fitted it to the bulkhead in front of the engine. Ran a couple of lengths of fuel delivery hoses (it's reinforced) between them, added an extra litre of oil to the engine, and never looked back... oil changes became something I looked forward to, not dreaded.... All for about 1/3 the cost of the Merc unit, and it took Z9 filters. :D

The problem with some of the aftermarket ones is that some people have problems with them and they leak. Just keep that in mind. Sure like the one they put factory on Volvos. Mounted right at the exhaust manifold.

That's how the Merc ones were until the MPI engines... For some reason some lunatic idiot in Merc decided that it would be cool to mount the thing upside down... I'd like him to come out and clean up the mess every time I change the filter.... ARRRRRR....

No the filter still filters the oil as long as you only puncture the outer case. This just gives an air relief that will let the oil drain out of the filter prior to removal .

Did a quick internet search and found all the gear you need at Summit Racing....

Here's the part numbers...

(1) Block adapter #PRM-114
(1) Remote filter mount #PRM1793
(4) Barb #PRS-1003
(4) hose clamps

You could also use pre-made hoses with AN fittings... That would eliminate the risk of oil leaks at the barbs.

I used 3/4" fuel suction hose as it's reinforced. Don't forget to calculate the volume of oil that will be in the hoses and add that to the engine....

If you puncture the outer case to allow the oil to drain out prior to removal, where does that oil go, if not back into the sump?

Sounds good Chris thanks for the info....I was under the impression you had to use a marine kit but I guess as long as you use good hose and clamps it'll be fine....

Don or Rodbolt posted on here many months ago about some of the aftermarket remote filter kits being "not so good". I will try to find that post.

Well, do it that way if you're a GIRL..... What you want to do is screw it on as far as you can by hand, then put a strap wrench on it with a 4 foot cheater bar.... Then keep turning until you just start to see the rubber gasket extrude out between the filter and the mounting.... THEN, it's tight.... :D:D:D
.

Thanks for the laughs... we needed it after fighting with the oil filter all afternoon, and more to come tomorrow!!

my trick to remove really tight oil filters is to use a heat gun and heat up the base of the oil filter to melt the o ring don't have to heat it much and it works 90% of the time

new to this forum by the way but been reading it for some time now

I like that a lot better than the propane torch suggestion... we'll break out the heat gun tomorrow and see if we can direct it there.

i should of added once you have it heated up rather then try to jerk it loose keep a constant pressure on it, that will aid in not collapsing the filter :)

Oh, the filter is loooong gone. It looks more like the remnants of a car bomb than an oil filter.

Of all these pieces, the only things left are the cover plate and the sealing ring. And enough jagged housing to be a nuisance. :D

Get out the hacksaw. The cover plate is where all the structural strength comes from.
