I can't seperate the power head from the lower unit on my Eska 7.5

I removed the lower unit and the shifter rod fell out. Low and behold the dog leg shift linkage broke right at the point that it connects.

I removed the six funky cap screws between the power head and the lower unit but it won't come apart.

Is there something else that must be done first. I can see where they come apart and I can get a screw driver in there but I don't want to break it beyond repair (that would defeat the whole "DIY to save cash" concept.

Thanks
Glenn

Welcome to Iboats Glenn,
it should come apart, on most models theres little notches on either side to pry on, sometimes it takes a little muscle to separate them old gaskets but with the foot off drive shaft out she will give sooner or later....I can't advise this but I take a hammer to the screw driver or pry tool and just bang away.

Just keep a close eye on what your punch is doing to the aluminum, that stuff is really soft. I used an adjustable air chisel with a blunt flat tip.

I finally found the time to get back to my repairs. Two brisk taps on the screw driver and it popped right apart. What I found was that the top linkage between the shaft and the shift rod was broken, the the shift rod was bent, the throtle lock-out piece was broken and the shift lever was broken. With all the shifting pieces broken or bent I decided to convert to direct drive. Now I just have to put it back together and hit the lake.
