I was taking the lower unit off my 98 225 and it would not come off so after some wrestling and prying the lower unit finally came off but the drive shaft stayed in the engine. The shaft came out of the lower unit, no damage to the shaft besides loosing the water pump. First of all How am I going to get the drive shaft out of the engine? I figure a shaft puller of some type or working it free by holding the fly wheel and twisting back and forth on shaft? Secondly the the manual shows a retianing pin that holds the drive shaft to the lower drive shaft in the lower unit. I don't think that was sheared off but if it was how am I going to get that back together?

this is not gonna be a easy task i have done many on small motors but an engine of that size will not be easy to flip upside down to get PB BLASTER get to the rust and do its magic. i have heard hitting the driveshaft from side to side lightly sometimes work while having some 1 pull down on it. i dont know of any pullers unless u are handy with making home made tools.

If you are patient,, you might want to try this:

First do exactly what Wayne said with the PB Blaster. Leave it to soak for 24 hrs.;

Secondly, connect a hose to the water tube with a clamp so that you can keep the motor cool;

Third, run the motor with the water running.

The rationale is that the drive shaft is probably not perfectly balanced and that the rotation will loosen the shaft. It works about 75% of the time.

Well I got it off using a slide hammer trouble was the hammer didn't have anything to hold on to so I modified a shaft collar which clamped over the end of the shaft. Took alot of banging but it came off. Funny thing is the shaft looks fine yes there is a little corrosion, but no galling or scrapping or deformation on the upper end of the shaft. There is alot of black almost looks burned residue like the molly lube I put on it cooked on. Well now that it is out what should I do to get it back in the lower unit and what could I do to the upper end to help this from happening again?

Every time you service the water pump, use Triple Guard or Molykote on the splines only (not on top end of drive shaft) and use a new O ring just below the splines. And don't let it stay in place for many years in saltwater or you're looking for trouble.
