took my drive of for the yearly maintenance and alignment check...it has been 2 years for my impeller and I am changing the carrier seal as well as shifter assembly .I found the remnants of what I believe to be my exhaust shutter in the lower drive unit ....it looks like less than half of it...2 pieces about the size of a quarter each ....where should I look for the rest of it? will the lack of an exhaust shutter contribute to a slight overheat?....any tricks to replace it? ....also took off prop to check and lube it and found fishing line behind it ....annual maintenance is highly recommended ,just look at the problems I have found before they became major....but it is now a liitle more work than I allocated ....oh well ,you just have to love boating:D

Shutters will not cause overheats, they are however damaged by overheats (lack of water and burning/melting).

Are you having overheat problems now? Might want to post a picture of what you found. Shutters are a lot larger than a quarter.

Re: I didn't want to find this

My gauge tells me I am in the 180 to 185 range but infra red shows me all around the thermostat housing and sensor at 160 to 165 ...I changed the sensor and the thermostat but the gauge reads the same so I ...assume...the gauge is out and I dont want to replace it right now ...I am trusting the infra red reading...the two pieces of shutter? are consistent with the black rubber over metal and a small bump on one piece that everyone describes ...I will try to post a pic ...not sure how ... I am the second owner and there was an overheat problem 4 years ago on this drive ...I have had it for 3 years...all the work was done by a local marina ,not by the previous owner

Not sure what that is in your pictures, but it sure doesn't look like shutter parts.
Might want to post some pictures of the lower including the pump, and inside the upper unit as well.

Can you ID the part pointed out in your picture below?

Re: I didn't want to find this

I am not sure what happened in the previous owners overheat situation...possibly this is debris left over from that repair? (I hope)I did a bellows ,gimball bearing ,hose and shift cable on the drive before this season and the unit has worked well except for my temp gauge issue as described above ....although....I have a problem that is unusual and have posted it here ...when my motor gets to operating temperature ,I get a squawk that I am unable to trace ...I changed belts ,disconnected the alternator and power steering pump and it is still there .....it seems to be coming from the center of the motor ...I changed thermostats cuz it shows up only at operating temps....I think it may be the block pump but people tell me they leak when the seal goes ...could I have a fracture of that impellar on the recirc pump?

Re: I didn't want to find this

Might want to consider pulling the elbow and just looking things over, in the upper, look to see if the item 7 (filler wall) shown in the picture below is in place.

Yes, then, even if it was from the previous owners overheat you can see if he fixed things correctly. I would suggest you get the OEM elbow gasket, not aftermarket. Much better material.

Ok ...I have never been that far into the motor, I will take it off and I presume you want me to take off the bottom boot and check around the shutter....any thing else I should be looking for?...thanks Bob

Re: I didn't want to find this

You don't have to remove the exhaust bellows, just look inside, you can see all the way to the exhaust tube.
The shutters is the only thing in the exhaust that could come off, other than chunks of the pipes themselves.

Re: I didn't want to find this

well I found where the pieces came from and I am surprised...before I took the elbow off I looked up the exhaust bellow with a flashlight and found a hole in the casting behind the shift shaft ...you can clearly see the gear clamp holding the exhaust bellows on the OUTSIDE of the housing ...what could have caused this and how do I fix it ...can it be repaired ,I have the pieces to go back in ...or is it nothing to worry about since it is under water anyway....thoughts anyone photo.jpgphoto-1.jpg

Re: I didn't want to find this

The hose clamp is installed improperly. It should have the clamp on the stbd. side of the bellhousing. It hit the transom shield and pushed it into the bellhousing.
