All, I am rebuilding a 66 40 Hp Big Twin and went on autopilot when it came to change the lower unit oil. I removed the phillips head screw to drain and while it was out I went through the gears and noticed a shifting problem. That when I researched and found I shouldn't have moved this. Do you guys have any suggestions to get this alinged? Thanks!

You can get the shift yoke realigned with much patience and a pointy awl or something like that to move the yoke around through the hole. It helps if you take the lower end off and lay it on its side.

Just wanted to let you know that worked. Although I had to take the lower unit apart to readjust the shift yoke. There's a gear its attached too and it popped off. Its shifting through the gears better now ;)

Cheers!

Bet you won't do that again! That screw should be labeled "don't touch".

Permanently etched in my brain! :) Thought for sure it was a drain plug! Well it did drain the oil ;)

I always thought that they should have put a darn allen head screw there, just so we'd think about it for a minute or two while rummaging around for the wrench......

I just did the same thing and am having the same issues :(
How do I know when it is in the right place? do I need to move the propeller around while doing this???
Thanks

OK, I gotta' laugh at the title of this thread "I disturbed the phillips head screw....." Maybe OMC should paint a bright yellow "DO NOT DISTURB" sign next to it. But I agree that OMC should have put an allen screw there.

Would you please let me know if you get/got an answer? I am knee deep in the middle of a lower unit rebuild and have the same concern...Honestly and for the record, I was NOT the one who removed the screw. Haha.

A two year old thread won't be helping you much. Post your questions in a new thread.

Welcome aboard, bodog.
