This is my first post.

This forum has been a great resource for me doing my first bellows job, and other assorted tasks.

Its a '79 Mercruiser 228

I've done my bellows/gimble bearing/alignment sucessfully.

Now I need help with the new shift cable. The pictures in the manual are really tough to see and understand shift cable routing. I neglected to take a picture of the routing of the old one.

Does the cable go above the riser elbow or under (through) it.. Are there supposed to be "j clips" ? There weren't any on the old one.

I've adjusted the cable 6" on centers in forward per manual,

The prop locks up well in reverse, but when spinning it ccw in forward, it does not always lock up. sometimes it ratchets a bit, and sometimes it locks up.. it seemed to lock up better when the drive was raised up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And thanks for all the information .

when you adjsuted the 6 inches in forward did you push in on the cable AND have someone spin the prop counter clock wise? that will make it engage and then lock in forward while you push in on the cable

Routing is sometimes where ever you can get it. Some go behind the exhaust down pipe and some go between it and the block, under the elbow. Where ever it is not laying against something hot. The manifolds and downpipe can get very hot if your impeller takes a dump and melt the housing. Never seen J-clips on them Zip Tyes on occasion.

Don't kink the housing trying to make a turn in the cable housing,Most of the ones I've replaced route behind the exaust elbow at the top
