I have that same information. those are spec. sheet's, they won't get you very far trying to take something apart, or put it back together.

people who choose not to steal are not uptight,
they are merely honest and walking the talk.

Its not so much the value or the method as the actual taking.

The real thievery is from all the companies charging us exorbitant amounts for 50 year old parts and information. I have no problems using their "redistributed" documentation. They (unfortunately) will still get my money from the parts purchases.

For the record, since a lot of the engines covered are similar from year to year under the cowl, you can also use www.BRP.com to look at diagrams and part numbers for old Johnson and Evinrude motors dating back to 1968 (and even older since the parts were interchangeable from about 1960 forward)

I wish to thank SAMS58 for posting the link, I can now invest the 60+ dollars for the manual I would have bought in a carb kit and some other parts I need. This way my wife will still speak to me when we get the boat on the water...

Walking the talk is getting the job done on time and under budget :D

Clymer and Haynes are like rap stars, let some one else make the music, sample it, tape it together and make a few bucks off someone elses imagination and sweat. I'm sure Clymer and Haynes has already made their money off of the poorly written manuals for a 50 year old engine.

I have no problems with using this manual, it will save me time and money.

Thanks for the post SAMS58

Information should be free.

Before people get all high and mighty He who has not ever linked /uploaded a picture copy/paste any text, or regergitated any written instruction from manual cast the first post....all that is "stealing" copyright applies to those as well.

Can't say I agree, you pay a butcher because he knows how to properly cut the 1/2 of hanging beef into steaks. You pay a computer guru to fix your laptop when you screw it up by installing that free screen saver. You pay a barber to cut your hair. You pay a realtor to sell your house. This list goes on and on... They all have information that you don't have, that's why to pay them...

If your alright with it, do it... I'll choose not to...

And these forums are provided for FREE by iboats with a ton of information for FREE if you familarize yourself with the search feature (or take the time to use it). Iboats is a for profit (I hope) business... So why bring it here if it's questionable on legality?

Funny how unthinking or naive people rationalize theft and dishonesty.

Hey, I have an idea for "getting the job done on time and under budget": around midnight tonight, take a big rock, break in the back window of the parts department of your local boat shop and just take what you need: the service manual and parts of course, but while you're at it, any specialty tools that are needed. THAT should save you a lot of dough and therefore is justified.

I guess I should make my point clearer though since this seems to be a tough concept for some people to understand: theft is theft whether through robbery or stealing copyrighted material. Period.

Once again: Right on comrad! Typical of the stealing through file sharing generation.

your comparissions are not valid, you pay those people for a service. i as a mechanic expect to get paid for my experience, tools and time. If someone asks me how to do something I am more than happy to share my knowledge. As it should be.

So if you work at a dealership, who pays for the shop manuals, if you work for a private shop, who pays for the Motor Alldata subscription...

My points are valid to me, I pay for the information I need as I require it and I respect the rights of those who own particular information to sell that information...

You folks are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine...

Nuff said... Thread will most likely be deleted anyways....

Of course, if you read my rant above, you will understand I agree with you completely. Except for one point: this is not a matter of opinion where every opinion is valid and should guide the holder of the opinion.

Unauthorized or unlicensed distribution of copyrighted material is a crime - this is a fact, not an opinion. People aren't entitled to an opinion on this - if they use copyrighted material without paying for it or permission, they are stealing it.

Here's another one for the ethicists to consider. How about the manuals on CD sold by numerous vendors on ebay? For less than ten bucks one can buy a full set of service manuals that cover every outboard (OMC or Merc - take your pick) from the 1950s until 2000 or later.

Before buying these, should we ask the vendor to see their copyright clearance documents? I have no idea where they get the Adobe versions of the manuals that they sell.
