I have an 84(so I was told) Johnson 90 hp and it has been nothing but trouble from day one. I have a few questions before I leave it at the dock though.
1.Does this thing have reeds, if yes where are they located?
2.If they are bad would that affect the way the fuel pump operated?
3.By messing with the butterflies would this affect the operation of the fuel pump?
For some odd reason I can't get the fuel pump to keep pumping fuel. I rebuilt the VRO pump with new diaphrams but it still won't stay running. My bulb will get very stiff but when you pull the line off the "feed" side going to the carbs, nothing comes out? Then to top it all off the damn starter took a crap today, aaaaahhhhhhhh. Any help of insight would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, has anyone had a problem getting their boat started only when its being put in the water. On the hose it used to start fine.

Spike.....The best investment you will ever make for this motor is an OEM manual.

Trouble shooting is an ordely logical process. Doing every thing under the sun as they pop into your head will cause you to lite uh big bond fire in your back yard and your motor will be in the middle of it.

I know its not funny when your mad and frustrated.

Calm down...and order a manual

Good luck!

The old "it runs on muffs ok, but won't start in water" routine. I had a similar situation. Found out that starting the motor tilted up to clear the bottom of the launch ramp made the motor run crappy. Now I wait until I can shove off into deeper water to let the motor all the way down. Then it fires right up and warms up in minutes. No more smoke, idle problems and chugging.

Are you running the motor tilted up?

I guess one good thing is you know your prob is from the bulb to the feed lines.... CHECK and recheck everything along it's way to make sure fuel is going through... try disconnecting what ever is on the way... when you push the bulb fuel should be able to pass... find the area that it don't and theres your prob.. or vicinity anyways

Goodoleboy has a plan!
Try www.outboardbooks.com for a manual.
I found manuals for a 1965 75hp Evinrude I may
consider overhauling if/when I learn about parts
availability.

Ok, lets slow down some. Describe which line youre taking off. I know it goes to the carbs but where is it on the pump?

Are you sure you have the lines to the pump all hooked up in the right place? Fuel in. Oil in. Pulse line. Fuel/oil out. 4 lines, make sure they all in the right place.

This may sound like a really stupid question but we cant see the motor. Is the bulb pointed in the right direction?

1. Yes the bulb is going in the right direction-believe me, I checked that more than once
2. Are u supposed to have fuel go through the pump when you pump the bulb with the line disconnected? If I disconnect the feed line from on top of the pump I can pump fuel out of the pump
3. my vro pump no longer pumps oil, I mix it in the tank. that shouldn't do anything, right?
4. last night i was able to get the damn thing started with the pull start(this sucks) but it only ran for about 45 seconds than ran out of fuel. the bulb was stiff after it stalled. when i tried to squeeze the pump nothing was going through the fuel filter. this isn't the first fuel bulb i have put on this thing.
5. could i have low internal compression which wouldn't allow the pump to work right? is there a test to determine if the internal compression is low?

pumping the bulb should get gas all the way to the carb/s. have you replaced the lines?

OK, you say that when you pump the bulb with the outlet line disconnected you get gas. Which would go to the carbs.

Then you said after it quit the gas wouldnt go past the filter. Which is before the pump.

Did you try by-passing the filter?
