I got a Weber gas grill.

Seems to me that the garden variety gas grill used to last 5-8 years or so. The last one was a Lowes "Perfect Flame" stainless steel unit that had the burners corrode/burn through in just two seasons of use. Ordered a new set of burners (3 at about $30 a piece) and that made it through another year and already one is shot. The grill before that was a Char-Broil brand, not too bad, but after 4 seasons, the burners were shot and it was cheaper to just buy a new one (hence the previously mentioned Perfect Flame).

So this year my wife is planning a big spring party. Wanted a new grill, and wanted a good quality unit. So after getting sticker shock on the Weber units, I find Ducane is now made by Weber and share many of the same parts, but cost much less. I see the warranty on the burners is five years. Just before placing an order for a Ducane, I called Ducane customer service and asked about the warranty. This year they changed the warranty from 5 years on the burners to 2 years. Hmmmm. Whats the point of the Ducane if they won't warranty the burners?

So after much back and forth, hemming and hawing, I ordered a Weber. 10 year warranty on the stainless burners, 25 on most other parts, and 5 years on painted parts.

Got the Genesis S-310 model. 41-aGw9d5zL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Darned things are quite a bit more than the run-of-the-mill, but when I stopped at a hardware store that had the Weber units on display, I can see there is a real difference in parts grade and quality. Makes me feel better about the price.

Hope all goes well with the order and it gets delivered safe and sound.

BTW, two websites that sell OE weber parts have separate listings for the Weber grills bought at Home Depot. That made me feel the HD units are not the same as the regular retail model, even though they have the same model number. At any rate, it made me purchase from an online appliance dealer.

I've had the same problems with gas grilles over the years. Finally built a shed so I could at least keep it out of the weather. But,filled the shed with stuff and can't fit the grille inside.

Keeping it out of the weather,or under a grill cover will make it last longer. And clean it often down in the hold.It should last a long time.Be sure to fire it up and burn the new off of it before the the party.

I have the same grill, best grill I ever bought and worth every penny. It's built well, it cooks even and the heat control is outstanding. I got the Weber grill cover for it and even it works great. The fit and Velcro straps really enhances protection. Think you'll be very please.

Nice choice Mark, the last Weber I bought was 10 years ago. Last Father's Day, my Son bought me new stainless steel burners and an igniter from an online parts shop that sells Weber OEM parts. About 5 years ago I replaced the iron grates with ceramic ones.

Now I'm good for another 10 years :D

Webers are the King of the Hill. I found that out after going through like 3 others in 5 or 6 years. Besides the burners rusting right out the paint comes right off most of the other brands. Amazing how good they all look in the stores, yet they rust out in a couple of years in the Northeast. I too keep it covered after using it and in the garage over the winter.

Not sure if you read my recent grill thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=463728 but I had the same experience at you. Had a nice enough Brinkmann grill that after 3 years the burners were shot. I replaced them but at that time I could already see that the overall structure was deteriorated enough that I knew I wouldn't be doing that again. We're now at the six year mark and it's pretty well dead. I've made the decision to go with the same one you got (except I want the side burner) now I just need to commit the funds.

Very nice grill!

I was thinking we should start a thread on BBQ maintenance since everyone seems to be dealing with issues.
I have always thought the worst things you can do for your Q is not using it enough (moisture build up) or not burning off the fats and sauce at the end of your cooking session, or not cleaning it to remove the carboned meat/sauce chunks.

If it will hold moisture, it aint gunna last.

(OH ya, put the bug catchers over the air inlet)

Congrats on the new grill. Way better than briquet's and jet fuel
Anyway, with a few mesquite or hickory chips added on the side, your steaks will be as tasty as anyone's. Enjoy

Not sure if it's the same with Weber, but I learned with Charbroil that you should buy a couple of covers and spare burners right off the bat. Within five years it was tough to find either, since that was an "old" model by then.

I bought a Weber gas grill about 6 years ago, done nothing but clean it since. Still works like new. It will outlast me. I love the cast iron grates. It was well worth the extra cost in comparison to others I have had.

Weber makes high quality stuff. I've had my Weber charcoal grille for 35 years now, I've replaced the handle twice, that's it. My cheap gas grilles rust out in 3 or 4 years.

Weber is a different animal. This grill should last at least 20 years if properly cared for (my Buddy's grandparents Weber gas grill is from the late 80's and still going strong!). All parts are still available for my 10+ year old Genesis Silver.

Re: I got a Weber gas grill.

I have a $30 charcoal cheapie from walmart. I've had it for 6 years and it's still going strong.

What I don't get is how come my cheap grill isn't rusted out? Even the cheap wire racks are in good shape. I don't cover it and it gets left on my back patio all winter long.

My guess is that the grill lasts so long because with charcoal you have to empty the contents of the grill for every use so it is just kept cleaner.

I have nothing against gas grills, I just find charcoal much more satisfying to use. The heat is more even, the food is flavored from the smoke, and flare ups are much less without the open flame.

Re: I got a Weber gas grill.

I like to grill with charcoal, especially on the beach (where a lot of charcoal is used due to the constant breeze). Usually buy a $10-20 cheapo stamped sheet metal grill from Walmart or A&P and toss it at the end of the year.

I would like to have a nice heavy cast iron post style (like you find in the state parks) in the back yard to use once in a while.

Problem I run into with charcoal is after the fire burns down, the cooking has to stop while more coals are added and then wait for it to all get going again. That is a nice advantage of a gas grill. Heat when you want it for as long as you want it for uninterrupted cooking. How can I do the same with charcoal?
