Baldguy,

I do not know if waving to them had anything to do with you getting boarded, but as far as getting boarded a second time, The first question they asked me was, when was the last time I was boarded or had a safety inspection, and the last thing they said, was if you get stopped again this season just show them the boarding report that he gave me!

Re: I got Boarded....

Often times, people would ask me what the Auxiliary was about. The best response I could think of is "It's like Boy Scouts, except for adults." It was nice to be out on the water all saturday, burning someone else's gas while helping other people at the same time.

I'm glad I spent time there...

Oh, and by the way. When you see em floating with a pair of binoculars... They're not looking for suspicious activity... they're looking for Two-Pieces... :D

Sean

Re: I got Boarded....

Got stopped by Wildlife Resources several years ago. It was a pleasant experience and I learned somoething. He asked me for my fire extinguisher. I removed it and handed it to him. I supposed he was checking for correct pressure, etc. I'm sure he checked for that, but he turned it upside-down and with it in one hand, pounded it against the other, then handed it back to me. When I inquired what that was about, he said that the dry chemical in fire extinguishers on boats tends to become packed due to the pounding action of the boat on waves. I had never thought of that but it made sense and I loosen it up myself now on occasion.

Remember, the rationale on most laws is that somewhere, at sometime (because of the utmost stupidity), that these idiots caused a problem that now must be addressed. We then, as law abiding citizens, must be subjected to the same rules as the unprepared.
"The only reason some people are alive is because it is against the law to kill them" or if someone is an idiot and does something even stupider than can be imaginged than you will have to live with it.

Re: I got Boarded....

I was detained 3 times last year, once I was with a couple of freinds from out of town, with their kids for a fishing trip for the young ones.Once while I was diving (under the water with a flag out). And another time with my girlfriend on our way to diner. It was the police everytime, looking for beer on board.Maybe the C G has more sense than to pull alongside with a diver down flag out,but those morons from the OPP should be pulled off the water for endangering my life and my dive partners. The result of all this.. 2- 5 year olds crying and a couple of upset women who were sun-bathing. I keep my boat in shape and Always am compliant with safety regulations.I never alowed beer on my boat. I know they have a job to do, but maybe they should learn some comon sense before they get out on the water.

Jim

Re: I got Boarded....

About 10 years ago, I was on my brother's boat in Wilmington, North Carolina when we were stopped and boarded by the real Coasties. The ensign asked my brother if he knew how to operate a boat? My brother, being a former Naval Officer and XO of nuclear boomer out of Kingsbay as well as teaching at the Naval Academy where he took midshipmen on blue water sailing cruises from Maryland to the Bahamas and back, more or less told the ensign his "boat driving" resume. Well this did suite the ensign as it kind of made him feel like, well like an idiot. So he scoured my brother's Grady from bow to stern and could not find a thing wrong. The Coastie was fuming because he couldn't find anything wrong and then low and behold, he asked my brother if he had his VHF marine radio license on board. Remember this was the time when the FCC required a license to operate a VHF radio. My brother left it at home, but he had it. He told the Coastie this and the guy wrote my brother a ticket for not having it on board. The next day my brother took the license down to the Coast Guard Station and proved he had it. The ticket was torn up.
GradyBob

Re: I got Boarded....

I am all in favour of safety checks. I was a member of a rescue group a few years ago and pulling idiots back in was tedious at best and a danger to folk in genuine trouble at worst. I also see that, for the most part, the people crewing the patrol boats are just trying to keep people safe. All power to them. We had an incident a few years ago, where a guy took his family (wife and 2 young children) on a trip to one of our offshore islands. They never made it. The wife spent 2 days and nights on some reefy outcrops waiting for someone to come close enough to notice her. I don't have a problem with this idiot killing himself, that's just natural selection doing its job, but to take 2 young children out and kill them too?

Chris.............

Re: I got Boarded....

I got stopped once by those idiots. They claimed I didn't yield to their right of way. Since when does a vessel approaching from your stbd aft quarter have right of way before he is directly abeam? He was not flashing lights/horn/radio or anything else that would even make me look behind and see him.

It was obvious he was looking for something to do on his morning cruise at taxpayer's expense. I just kept sayimg yes sir no sir and being real polite and he left after giving me a verbal warning.

Listen to the people manning channel 16 - I think that's where they put the trainees who aren't even qualified to go on boat rides....

I support their military purpose completely - I just don't see why they have to harrass recreational boaters without probable cause or signs of manifestly unsafe activity.

There is something about having a stranger jump on your boat at will for a “safety check”. Could you imagine a cop pulling you over and walking up and jumping into your front seat of your car. “Hi, just here for a safety check”.
On the other hand, if you think about it, ALL autos are required to pass a mandatory safety inspection each year (at least in every state in which I've lived). In a sense, different methodology to accomplish the same goal.

Also, auto road checks (police road blocks) are becoming much more common around here (NC). They're more for checking for alcohol and liscense/ registration than for safety, although if there is an obvious safety violation like a dead taillight they'll nail you on it. Not quite the same as climbing in your car, but in a way could be considered invasive as well..

As far as power trips/ attitude, we got a new wildlife control officer on our lake in the past year. Young, overzealous, power trip, etc. Enough that some boaters people called his supervisor and politely 'shared their experiences' with him. Supervisor said he understood and apparently had a talk with the new guy, things got better after that.

Re: I got Boarded....

Coast Guard doing their job is one thing. They are usually pollite and professional. It's the Barney Fife's that got the local taxpayers to get them a boat, or even worse the "Auxillary" idiots that I have a problem with. This past Labor day, I watched in horror, as an "auxillary IDIOT" cut off, ran in front of and endangered several boats as he sped directly in front of the boat I was next to the captain of. We were traveling UPRIVER, the tachs were below 1000 rpm's (85ft boat) and after the captain had to throw both engines into reverse to avoid hitting the morons, they sere screaming "no Wake Zone". The problem was that this area had been designated an IDLE ZONE. IF they had any clue, they would know that an idle zone is the minumum speed to maintain steerage. An 85 ft boat traveling up river probably will make some wake. They were on a power trip....nothing more, and had dissregarded all safety, just to show their authority. Could they have "come alongside".....sure, could they have "hailed us" sure. Next year is my turn to take everyone out for the labor day fireworks. I hope I "remember" where reverse is, if some idiots do the same thing.

The sheriff dept. in Branch County Mi, boarded us one time. Very polite, and helpful. Also got my 10 year old granddaughter convinced her life vest is not an option, the option was jail or drowned. Now she is in love with the young man.

Waterone:

Personally, I feel it is both niave and degrading to lump all Auxiliarists as "auxillary idiots." I can name at the very least 5 Auxiliarists who, not only know a LOT about boating, boating safety, and the rules of on-the-water activities. In addition, there are some "bad apples" out there, but unfortunately the acts of a few which, obviously in your case, put a bad light on the rest. The Auxiliarists are VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME while RISKING THEIR lives for the boaters of the world.

You may call them "auxilliary IDIOTS," but try to remember that when you do something idiotic and are hailing them on the radio for assistance.

Long story short, remember to lump the good things in with the bad. You will notice that there are people out there who are genuinely trying to help.

Sean

Re: I got Boarded....

Lakelivin
Just so you know. I think those “sobriety check points” or what ever they call them this year are a violation of our rights also. It kind of reminds me of the Brandenburg Gates during the cold war except they replaced “papers please” with “driver license and registration”. It just doesn't seem right. If they blue light you they have to have probable cause. At a check point there is no probable cause but they get away with stopping you anyway.
