Remember this thread from back in May about some kid or kids who stole a cast iron chiminea? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=477079

Here is a bit of an update: Hurricane Irene washed out a gravel road on an neighbors property. This is a large working farm and the gravel road is just a few hundred yards down the road from my driveway. My neighbor had his 'dozer out repairing the road, and went down to the stream that was partially filled in with the washout from the road. When he was down in the stream, low and behold he sees my Chiminea half covered in the wash out. Having been to our house numerous times with his family, and spending hours sitting around the chiminea at night, he recognized it right away. It now is in my back yard in pieces. Unfortunately, it is damaged, and missing one iron leg and has some cracks in the iron. I guess it can be welded back together if the missing leg is found. Neighbor said he has a metal detector and will look for the leg, as I would like to get this thing welded up.

I called the State Police and filled them in on where and how it was found. And suspiciously, where the chimminea it's location is right across the street from a know problem "kid". This kid is now 22-23 years old, and still apparently lives at his parents house.

Right now I'm waiting for the investigating detective to call me about the recovery of stolen property. My wife had gotten a call last week from the detective, saying that he not not forgot about the theft, and that there were other similar reported incidences in the area past month or so.

My neighbor who found the chiminea, knows this kid well, and says this is exactly the kind of thing he does.

Even if the kid is not brought to justice, hopefully Carma will get him.

Good for you and hope they can pin this on the kid. Sounds like a cast iron chiminea so it all can be repaired.

Years ago when my son was young, he had a friend that would take just about anything if it wasn't bolted down. I was missing some stuff and knew he took it. I confronted him not about the theft, but here is what I told him. "You break the law, be prepared to pay the consequence. A judge will be easier on you than the owner that doesn't care about breaking the law when he goes about breaking you. Anybody is capable of breaking the law especially in the name of revenge". He never ever took anything from my house or property since. My son told me that the kid thought about what I said and he was stopping his theft. I don't know if he still does, but maybe I had an impact on him.......SS

Hate to say it but the kid will never be charged unless there is solid evidence . Without his fingerprints on it or an eye witness that saw him with it you have no case,

Once it was found you should have put it in the kids back yard and called the cops.

Yup,so true. In the old days kids had fear and respect for adults. Like what SS MAYFLOAT did to scare the daylights outa this kid. Today if you did that same thing the punk could take a warrant out and have you arrested......I know because I had it happened to me and it cost me over $500 in fines and court costs. My advice now is to go straight to his azz and get your money's worth.

Yeah. I know he will never be charged. But just the fact that the state troopers know what was stolen from my back yard was found across the street in a stream from the suspects house is important. There are no local police where I live. All calls are handled by state troopers, who have a very low tolerance for this crap. So in their eyes, the known problem kid is going to be even more scrutinized. Maybe search his vehicle when stopped. Maybe stopped just because a "light is out", etc. The more I load against the young man, the greater the chances he will have a serious run-in with the law.

That is my only hope.

Oh yeah, I got this really cool scope that fits my rifle like a glove. Amazing what I can hit with it. But thats another topic.... :D
