Glad to see you are getting over the "sticker shock". If she floats, just take it easy, and putz around the landing for a while so you can get it back on the trailer before anything bad happens if it were to.

Most importantly, make sure you have all the required items in your boat when you launch....fire extinguisher being a very important one with an I/O.

Does anyone have any thoughts on git rot? Its on the expensive side but from what it claims might be worth it.

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

i'd say you got a pretty good deal too. another way to look at it is that for your $550 initial cost plus whatever parts and supplies you need to get it running/repaired, you're getting one hell of an education with virtually no risk. get her into good running shape and enjoy the rest of the summer. study up on the floor/transom repairs and knock that out when it cools down. after that, sell and put your learning to use on the next boat or keep it knowing that it's in better shape than most boats half its age that are out there.

no experience with git rot but i'd advise that you really want to see what's hiding under the floor before you start your plans too much. rot doctor and seacast are other products you might get to use.

Coolest looking boat ever! Even with the soft spots you can work through that if you've got the desire. Most of the time $500.00 won't buy a decent boat trailer! I say good find that just needs a little work!

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

I'm afraid the stringers are beyond anything that Git Rot could help.
That engine is severely leaning forward. Before i even thought of getting it in the water the engine mount needs to be fixed, even if its a temporary fix to lift the front up.A temporary 4x4 or something to hold it up.
All that said its still a good looking old boat.it looks like someone has replaced the vinyl so thats one good point.
I would get something to lift the engine back up and have a close look in the bilge.

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

I also had a Thunderhawk boat. Mine was an outboard version and only 15ft long. I purchased it in GA where yours is registered but never learned anything about the manufacturer. It was a very heavy boat that was used primarily for fishing. It had a 100HP Johnson that I replaced with a 75HP Johnson and it stayed in the family for six years. One comment about your I/O arrangement regarding motor mounts; I believe the early model OMC were mounted to the transom and did NOT rest on the stringers. You need to pose that question to the OMC Sterndrive Forum experts which I am not!

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

I've used "seacast" pour in transom a couple of times now with good results. it's just a fairlyt strong polyesther / styrene resin with long strands of glass in it.

In each case, the transom was rotten, one was on an aluminum boat. I cut two windows out of the top of the transom, and then user a long fairly large (i.e.3/4 ") drill bit to chew up the "wood" that remained in the transom. Between the drill and a vacuum cleaner with a piece of pipe for an extension. can be a little tedious, but worked really well and didn't require near what a full cut it out and replace with wood replacement would do. I was careful to get all the wood out, to drill small holes in the corners and sides and also to pour it in layers to ensure that all the voids were filled. The first one I did was about 10 years ago. A buddy still has the boat and swears it's still solid as a rock. It's a little heavier than wood, but after playing with the hardened leftover from the first job, I wouldn'e hesitate to trust one built that way. I literally couldn't break it...

note that this isn't exactly an easy job either... but it's another option.

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

Well it just keeps getting better, took it to the lake today and it started right up no problem. Then the temp went up to 200 hundred degrees so i shut it off. next i noticed i had water coming in at a slow rate. Got it back to the trailer and when i got it out and looked i had water dripping out the center of the boat at the bow, its has a crack in the glass right in the middle about 2 inch's long. I have replaced all the water hoses but i dont think i am getting water through the engine. As far as the engine mounting goes, if you try to lift up on the motor it wants to pull on the transom, it wont move more then 1/8 of on inch if that much.

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

You shouldn't have any give in the transom, but an 1/8th inch is pretty minimal for what it is. It just means you'll have to do the transom, but as long as you don't beat on it and keep an eye on it, it'll hold until you decide to succumb to a transom replacement/find another boat.

Far as the crack in the hull, do a little reading up on fiberglass and you can patch that right up pretty easily. May not look the greatest, but at this point, it doesn't anyway.

Well i got a bad thermostat, There is more copper tubing in my boat then my house. Volvo must have forget about cooling when they built these motors and had to do a frankenstein plumbing job. Leak city when you mess with the old o rings. Tomorrrow is another day, hopefully better.

Hey, you did good. The money you paid wouldn't even cover a decent trailer. The boats fiberglass looks good. It looks like original interior which is a plus. Throw a few bucks into it and enjoy. Get rid of the whale tail.

I think it really should be glassed from the inside. That is a substantial gash.

Re: I Got Screwed - "I Think"

You did OK for that price. You could part it out and get more than what you paid. Bond-o is right about not having any forward engine mounts. Those old Volvos just hung from the transom. You can, and I would install forward mounts to the stringers. I have seen it done and in my opinion it is a good idea.

Have a great day,

Rob.
