Outrage - I think you are faced with a major repair. Hopefully JB will jump in as he is the resident Whaler expert. There is a web site that focuses on Whalers that would be another resource for you. Use the search to find it. You are going to have to build a patch from both inside and outside of the hull.

Looking at this, my feeling is the first thing you need to do is to resolve whatever trailer issue you have that would cause this sort of damage. You do not want to repair it just to have to do it again.

Since there is foam present, it will provide structure. The foam would need to be thoroughly dry, but I don't see a reason you can't do a repair from the outside. Without going into excessive detail, the fiberglass around the hole would need to ground in such a manner as to create a dished effect. At least three inches would need to be ground all the way around. The foam, after ensuring dryness, would need to be built up and leveled to create a surface to then lay layers of increasingly sized fiberglass layers. Once almost flush, a layer of gelcoat would be applied, trying to match the color of course. The fiberglass repair would bond with the foam as well as the existing fiberglass. I feel ripping into the hull, tearing out the foam just to get to the backside is not only unnecessary, but would reduce the structural integrity of that area. In anotherwords, it would be counter productive. This is just my opinion though. You should check into how this sort of thing is repaired on Whalers. The Whaler site should have this info, I can't imagine none of those salts have never damaged their hull before. Good luck...

I go with Jason, I'm sure it can be done from the outside, especially if you use Epoxy. Be carefull with the grinding. You need clean, dry laminate to get a good bond. I wouldnt worry about levelling the foam, just build the layers in the patch up untill you can sand to a surface level with the previous. You will have to grind to make sure the edges are v'ed over at least 3" on every edge of hole. Get rid of any water if foam first, or it will stay in there for ever. Start with a wet vacuum cleaner on foam.

Re: I Hate My Trailer Please Help

So Little, thanks for the info about the Whaler site. I didn’t even think such a site existed. I’ll be looking for it.

JasonJ, as always you cut right to the root cause. The cause was my own laziness. I have a Cox tilting trailer. I sold a lot of these when I worked at a boat shop in the mid 80s. When loading, the trailer should only be backed in to where the last roller is under the water. As the boat comes up on the trailer it tilts to support the boat and keep it aligned. This means a lot of cranking for a 19’ boat, and on a steep ramp a Boston Whaler is quit a heavy boat. So I got lazy and backed the trailer in about 2/3 the length for less cranking, the wind caught it and presto instant hole. I have plans to convert this trailer to 4 bunks sometime in the feature. Sorry for the dissertation of loading a Cox trailer but maybe someone else can learn from my mistake.

G DANE, I’ve read lots of your posts and learned a lot from your responses over the years.

I have 2 questions, first how can I tell the foam is dry, it is dry to the touch or is there something else I should look for? Second it looks to me like there is at least 3 layers to the hull in your opinions what kind of mat should I start with, roven woven or weaved mat.

Thanks everyone I'll keep this thread updated with what I learn from the Whaler site and my progress.

Cover the hole with clear plastic, and let it sit for half a day or so, plastic taped on all edges. If foam is wet, drops will form on inner side of plastic. If it does, it will need to dry further.

My guess would be than you would need 5 or 6 layers of mat, woven or chopped strand. A rule of thump is that you need to grind the edges of the laminate 3/4" out from hole for every milimeter the original laminate is thick. I think 3" would be fine.

Re: I Hate My Trailer Please Help

Ok here’s what I learned from the Whaler enthusiasts at Continues Wave. They have a link to Boston Whalers procedures in a post-titled Best Material for Hull Repair. Here’s the link http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/repairInstructions.html.

As is the norm something has come up which requires my attention and will delay my repair for about 2 weeks. I’ll pick up this post when I pick up the project again.

Hay all what’s the best way to remove antifouling paint around the hole? I’ve read where sanding could work it into the fiberglass. Is this true?

It wount, just beware of the dust, that stuff is poison. Wet sanding is safer, just avoid wetting the foam. Wipe laminate with acetone afterwards. Be sure to sand all gel coat of, it reduces the bond.

Thanks G DANE I didn't know the dust was poison. I’ll have to keep my 3 year old helper/son away while I’m working. It'll brake his hart.

Thi first picture was better. I am sure you can fix that, using the method I described, just take the time it needs to sand and do a good epoxyu patch with overlay in multiple layers, and you will be fine.

Re: I Hate My Trailer Please Help

Hi all well I got started this weekend following Boston Whalers instructions. I sanded the area, cut out the frayed and cracked glass, feathered it back 2”, and dug out the foam 1” back.

Chief 101 you were right the foam on the keel side of the hole is saturated with water. So now comes the question of is it better to dig out the wet foam and replace it, or dry it out some how? My first thought is to drill a hole the same size as my vacuum cleaners hose about 6” toward the keel, tape the end of the hose to it and let it suck for about 2 days. My second thought is to dig out the foam and replace.

I’d appreciate some feed back from you great guys as to which one is the better choice or if anybody has a better idea please chime in.

Thanks A Ton

Outrage 19
