I can't remember when Merc went to their Thunderbolt ignition from the old-style magneto ignition. If yours is a true old-style magneto ignition, you will need to pull the flywheel to get to the coils/points/condensors. It could be something as simple as cleaning/dressing and regapping the points. Might also want to check the condition of the contacts in the distributor cap and the condition of the plug wires...on my old 73 Merc 500 the plug wires unscrewed from the distributor cap, so try that before going gorilla and just pulling on the wires. If it's a Thunderbolt ignition, can't help much other than to say that someone else will be along shortly with the steps to diagnose the problem.

if the wire were corroded, the kill wires to the coils could also be and grounding out the coils.

my distributor cap has like locking washer around the nuts (alum tabs)...

+ ITS UPSIDE DOWN - under the throttle body ??

how do u remove the cowling around it .. ?

so far mines like 4 different pieces ... (the cowling)

if the Thunderbolt ignition has coils and power packs then this one isnt ...

thank you ....

The flywheel is the big round metal thing on top of the engine, secured by a nut on a shaft. You need a flywheel puller to remove it to check the points/coils/condensors under it.

You should not have to remove flywheel to get at your magneto. There should be four 3/8" nuts and your magneto will come off the bottom. Check your points. Mine went. on my 66'. 1st thing you need is a manual!!!

If it's like my 66 if you remove the aluminum frame on the front of the engine (sorry don't know the proper names) that's about a foot high and 10 inches wide it should give you more access to the distributor assembly.

You may have to remove a few linkages and a couple of other things to gain access.

1st time took me about an hour to figure it out. Now about 10 minutes.

If this is a 1969 it has the trigger fired thunderbolt ignition with surface gap plugs, (not the old style magnito). You need to troubleshoot the trigger to determine if the problem is the trigger or the switch box. The procudure is here on this forum. JR
