Hello everyone, I'm Joe and am new to the forum. I bought my first boat this year, a 22 ft Hurricane FD226. It has a 1991 force 120 on it, but i do not believe it was originally on it. It has a mercury side mount control box and the wiring has all been cut and other wires ran for the engine..Also none of the guages work. Anyway, can someone tell me what control cables force uses? and will mercury quicksilver binnacle control work on this engine?? It is a cc boat and they have some sort of aluminum monstrocity hanging off the side of my console to mount the side mount controls it just looks trashy, plus it doesn't feel reel good in your thigh when you crash into it..

Also I can't get it to Idle. I have sprayed about a half a can of B12 chemtool through it and ran a pint through the gas tank.. It will idle with the cover removed, but as soon as you put it back on she dies..

Any help with these issues will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Did you mess with the low idle adjustment? Factory setting is 1 1/4 turn out from lightly seated. Also, coming out of the back of you motor, there should be a rubber boot that goes to the back of the motor housing, to funnel your exhaust and water out. Make sure that is in place, otherwise you carbs will be sucking in exhaust, rather than air, when the cover is on.

Thanks Haywood 123,

I have adjusted the screws, but thats where they evened out was about 11/4 to 11/2 turns out.. I will definately check the boot, didn't know about that one..
The first time we took the boat out, the float bowl fell off the bottom carb and had to fix that on the ramp, maybe I got a litle trash on the needle or something, I thought i got it good and clean before I put it back though..

Thanks again

Are your carb gaskets all in good shape and your carbs are tightly against the block? If not, you will suck air. It usually isn't too noticable at idle though. How long do you let it warm up first? Mine tends to be a little cold blooded, so I have to rev it up out of gear for a while.

Yes, gaskets are all good, and carbs tight.. I checked all that after the one fell apart on me.. I usually run it on high idle as long as it takes whoever launches me to park the truck and get back to the dock, usually about 5 to 15 minutes.. It runs out really good, and after a long run, 4or 5 miles or so, it will idle for a few minutes.. last weekend we were chasing diving birds for stripers and white bass, and i actually had to shut it off about three times that day after long runs.. Usually when you pull the shifter back to neutral, it just dies..

Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak from what I've read here in the past!
Research "exhaust leak under cowling" or "engine stalls with cover on" or something simular using the search botton at the top of the page.
Hope this will help! Good Luck! Have A Great Day! max!

I had that happening to me and I was told to check all the grounds for the motor and the controls. I looked around and jiggled stuff and made sure the connectors werent bad and i did something to solve the problem. Not sure what. Good Luck

Howdy everyone,
I have an update.. The old force shelled reverse before I could get the idle problem fixed.. Oh well it was going to be replaced anyhow. i found a 1990 model Evinrude xp 150 to take her place..I bet it will push the 22' hurricane a little better..
Thanks for the help everyone.
