Hi the last time i was out i noticed i was taking on water. i was loaded down with 6 people but i had done this before. When i took the boat out of the water and i noticed a dribble from around the plug. I got it home and looked closer it is leaking from around the outside of the metal piece that is in the transom that the plug goes into. How could i fix this? Can i just put silicone around it?

You'll need to remove the garboard plug (several screws) and inspect the transom for signs of water infiltration. If wet, leave plug out til things dry out, then replace the plug using a marine-rated sealant inside the drain hole and in the screw holes. You might want to inspect all other thru-hull fittings for problems.

Might be best to share some information about your boat too, i.e.; how old is, what type of transom, etc? Your plug wouldn't be the first one to leak, but you want to make sure your transom is solid and not rotting from water infiltration first and foremost. I've seen a boat hit the bottom of the lake due to a transom giving out. You can usually tap on it lightly with a hammer and you'll notice the sound "change" if there's a possible issue. Once you determine it's solid, however, then it's best to reseat the plug as Coastalrichard shared. Pics are the main thing for now.

I can post pics when i get off work. The boat is a 1978 glasstex tri hull i believe it is an apollo even though the side says sea star. I believe the transom is solid. I just took off the motor and put it back on to change steering cable. It seemed sturdy doesnt flex much when shaken hard.

I post pictures by going through an outside storage server like "Photobucket". That way it's a simple, "Cut-n-paste" procedure. As far as the transom, "just a little flex" may be too much. Use a rubber mallet or the handle end of a hammer and tap that thing all around. When you're tapping solid wood, it sounds "solid", when you hit the mush, it'll produce a deader sound. Since it sounds like you need to take the drain plug out, it may become obvious then if there's an underlying issue with rot. When you remove the plug recepter, if pieces of wet wood come out with, that's a sign. Search transom replacing in the Restoration Forum and you'll see a bunch of tips on checking and replacing it. It's a little work, but no where near as bad as people assume it is. Plus, it's an absolute life saver as I wasn't exaggerating when I said I'd seen a bad-transom-boat go to the bottom of the lake before. The thing is, you never know when it's going to fail on you either so an ounce of prevention is more than a pound of cure.

I would also seriously consider removing those old transducer mounting screws and injecting some 3m 5200 into the holes. Those old mounting screws are notorious for leaking if not sealed correctly with below the water-line marine grade sealant.

Ok i had thought about removing them. Should i fill it with sealant and put them back in or leave them out? Also how can i seal the bolts that hold the motor on? So how do i get that metal piece out? Can i just use the 3m sealant around it to stop the leak? Because from what ive seen ill have to remove the floor to get to the plug. Sorry if i sound stupid im new to all this.

Well, it is definitely not a standard garboard plug and appears that, if there are fasteners on it, they must be somewhere else. Perhaps others reading this post will have better information for you.

As far as the transducer screws, I would remove them, fill the holes with a marine-grade sealant and re-install the screws. The transom mounts bolts need to be removed, the holes filled with sealant and the bolts re-installed. That boat has some age on it. Emoney is spot on...you must make sure that transom is solid or your new steering cable will become your new anchor line:eek:

its a straight tube you should be able to pull it out with a little work. go to west marine and buy a new one to replace it with, then you will not have to worry about getting it out and being able to reuse it . while there pick up some 3m 5200 to reseal the new one in and the other screws .

Ok thanks alot... It almost looks like its just hammered in there... Would marine jb weld work for sealant?

Re: i have a leak

No...use a marine-grade, below waterline sealant (3M 5200 is one). M, don't skimp on this. If you are lucky, you may have caught a potentially dangerous condition in time to remedy it without a transom rebuild. Repeat...that rig has lots of age on it...you must verify the integrity of the transom or you are at great risk every time that thing hits the water (it could even happen as you are trailering the rig). If necessary, install an access hatch in the floor in front of the transom so you can see in there.

Looks like you got screwed. This didn't happen in the last month or due to transit issue. Your transom is shot.

It's off to dry dock and transom replacement and FG work maybe floors and stringers or time for a new boat.

Do not use the boat it is not safe. You could end up with something that looks like this and easily sink your boat and put all aboard in danger
