Hi,
First off I would like to introduce myself. My name is Trung. I'm from Houston,TX. This is my first boat so I'm a total noob to boating. I picked up a 1995 bayliner trophy with a force 120 outboard for really cheap. My seller told me that the motor doesn't go up and down. The whole electrical unit on the boat were destroyed by his boat "mechanic." Well my friends and I took all the wires out and ran our own wire harness. The person that worked on the boat before really didn't know how to work on it. Well after two days of hard labor in 100 degree heats, we finally finished. The boat start up and the trim also worked. Everything on the boat worked.

I was so happy when we finally get to take it out to the lake to test it out. The boat didn't want to start. My heart dropped.

Now the problems I'm having are:
It's so hard to start when it's cold or rested for more than an hour. I have to spray the starting fluid in order to get it to start.
Now ever since we couldn't get it to start in the lake, it has been acting weird. The motor would start but it would die at idle. I completely don't know what the problem is. Spark plugs were changed not too long ago and still look really good.

Would it be the battery? I was told to check the stator. Where and how would i remove it to replace it?
Sorry for the long post, but please help me out. I will welcome and advice. I'm a complete noob to boat and the motor. Thank you for you time.

You have to mix 2stroke oil into the gas for Force engines. If the engines sits for a long time the gas in carbs will evaporate and leave a residue. The residue makes the engines very hard to start if they interfere with carb jets or small air passages. If the residue is bad enough it could even interfere with fuel delivery at idle rpms. As throttle increases you draw more air and create more vacumm which makes the problem less significant.

starter fluid is probably bad for your engine. your engine needs the oil in the gas to keep itself from burning up.

You should never need starting fluid. If you have to then something (usually bad)is wrong. You need to do a compression test. Then a spark test. Then check the fuel system.
Ethanol is messing up a lot of motors. It's delaminating the inside of older hoses causing clogs in the carbs and fuel filter.Check for soft hoses and junk in the filter on the motor.Check the diaphram.
Bayliner and Forces have kept me busy for a long time.Nothing to say is just that.J

you're just jealous because you boat didn't run perfect 25 years without ever costing more than pocket change to maintain ... after which the boat ended up selling for more than what you paid.

Be sure you're following the cold start proceedure to a tee. Miss a step and the difficulties appear. Choke working? edit: If during the trouble starting it, coughing or backfiring occured, the fuel pump diaphram may have been damaged. I would check it anyway.

I got it to work. i was the spark plug. also ran into another problem. The starter went out. I'm going to take it out tomorrow and rebuild it. Hopefully rebuidling it is just like a car's starter. can't wait to go fishing this weekend.
