Call me crazy, or cheap....Im both!
I have an old mc-r outdrive i have laying aound, and a newish 20hp briggs with electric start, low oil, etc etc.
Im thinking about machining up an adapter to sit the 20 horse on top of the out drive, and using it as a kicker (dont wanna spend $3000 on a 15hp 4 stroke long shaft). Id likely add a jackshaft so i can reduce engine rpm from say 2000 rpm to 1000 at the input shaft of the outdrive. Do you guys figure this could push my 21' chieftan at 1.5-4 mph for trolling?
I will also make an exhaust manifold that will blend water from the outdrive waterpump with exhaust, and blow it through the prop to keep her REAL quiet.
Any opinions?

Yep, that sounds wacky.... Have you through up how you're going to shift gears? Or get a prop small enough (in pitch) to not overload and kill the 20hp engine?

Yup, gear change would be a small electrical actuator (ip67 rated). Im only in fresh water...
The thought was not to change prop pitch, but rather gear down the motor (jackshaft idea) basically making the 20 horse a 40 horse. Its just for trolling.
Instead of trimming or tilting the motor up or down, i would use the tilt trim rams to lift/lower the assembly up and down on a rail system.
a 15 horse merc 4 stroke weighs in at 135 lbs, im pretty sure i wont be too far from that.

I'm sure you could buy a used 10-15 long shaft for $500 that would work a lot better and immediately and be lighter.

Ayuh,..... I see it as a Waste of an outdrive, 'n a perfectly good B&S motor....

It'll be noisier than downtown traffic, at rush hour...

You wont find a 15 horse 4 stroke for $500.
NOBODY wants this outdrive, ive tried selling it.
I dont see it being noisy. It not terribly lound running on it own, and exhausted through the drive into the water, it SHOULD be pretty quiet.
Its basically junk i have laying around collecting dust. I feel the need to put it to use. Sorry lol
Does anybody have technical insight to this? (no offence to previous responces, but a lot of my projects are like this, and work out pretty good). I have a machine/fab shop in my garage... so to me, only imagination and lack of technical experience are the limiting factors.

Best Regards,
Stu

As I also have a 21' Chieftain and an 18hp Briggs vertical shaft motor laying around I'd like to see you try!
Would TnT be able to get the whole outdrive out of the water when fully up? I'd imagine if it were in the water at all the drag on that side of the boat would be pretty high when using the main engine.

I think it's a pretty cool project idea. Certainly worth a bench test. You have a few bugs to work out but that's half the fun. Best of luck.

Regarding you alternative 15hp kicker. I prefer the Yami T-8 over the 15. The 15's are just a little too much for anything up to about 25' . A You'll have to find a used one because they don't make right now. I think they'll bring it back, I know a lot of guys that have complained.
The Merc Pro Kicker in 9.9 is your choice for a full featured all in one kicker motor but they don't seem to last for some reason. You can get the same motor from Tohatsu but there's not much savings.

My "go to" fishin boat is a 16' JetCraft. I like to creep in and out of bays and run right up along ledges a lot. To do that the only thing I've felt safe with is my bow mount MinnKota. It'll get me out of trouble too but when the wind and waves are up I'm on my main.

Just some things that I thought about when you mentioned this project of yours.

I can't decide if this idea sounds more wacky or awesome. It sounds exactly like something I would do if I had the time and parts lying around. Please post some pictures!

Here's another idea, how about using a generator (Hooked up to your engine) and use an electrical motor hooked up to the outdrive? I have had that idea for a long time, just not sure how to do it.
