I have an odd idea

I haven't been into the bottom end of an outboard, but, I bet plenty of you have.

I was wondering if it might be possible to get to the con rods big end bolts through the reed cage holes. The motor is a 1983 johnson 150, model j150tlcte. I would like to replace the pistons and this would save mucho time and grief for me. So, can it be done?

Thanks in advance.

I guess anything can be done, they do operations on people through a tiny hole, but personally, what you are trying to do will take a lot more time and result in a patch up job than a proper strip down would achieve. Do the job and do it once PROPERLY.

I agree with the do it right. I was considering this because I lack a couple hundred bucks or worth of special tools, and, if I do pull the head I will be out of commission for at least a month. If I pull the power-head I will get the bores checked and honed at the least, which will require a machine shop that is backlogged 5 weeks, add a week to get the parts, about a week of working on it after work. Not a big deal to some, but that puts me into september which is getting a bit late to go boating. If I could swap pistons through the reed cage I would spend about 400.00 and be done in a day. I could then pull the motor, if warrented, in the fall and have all winter for a full rebuild. As is I have been looking for boats, power-heads and outboards.

I often have odd ideas. I usually keep them to myself but congratulate you for being bold enough to post your odd ideas where so many can see them. Unfortunately many of my odd ideas have lead to equally odd results. I think in this case, yours will too. Best of luck. Rick.

I have an "odd" question. Why do you want to replace the pistons ?

I once knew a proctologist that became a marine mechanic. That was how he fixed everything!

I see you haven't tore down an outboard. While the idea might seem feasable, it really isn't. When you pull the intake manifold, you will see that the bottom half of the crankase is cast to divert the fuel/air mix to the outside of the case. As a matter of fact, you will not even be able to see the rod/cap bolts. I am sorry, but you will have to pull the powerhead and split the case. If you require, I can post a pic. Good luck.

A pic is worth a thousand words. This is the access to the rod caps after pulling the intake.
