I have read on other places on the net that replacing the impeller for one of these is very hard. Mine over heated last time I was out because I wasn't getting any water. I took the spark plugs out and it turns over so I am hoping everything is okay. Any suggestions on replacing the water pump/impeller?

thanks

It's not hard if you feel mechanically inclined or have a friend that is. What is the motor?

Changing the impellar should be done at a minimum of every 2 years I do mine every season (yearly)

I meant to post the Engine as the subject. I am fairly mechanically inclined, but I also have a friend that is very mechanically inclined. We have jus read stuff on the net that would make us to think twice about doing this.

I read the below paragraph on a website by a collector of old outboards. It kind of scares me.

http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/01/articles/oldoutboards/

"I would not recommend that anyone other than a collector purchase a 50’s or even a 60’s Mercury. During this time period, Mercury was run by a man best characterized as a lunatic. This was reflected in the engines by lots of weird stuff like fine threads, left-hand threads, and assemblies requiring lots of special tools for disassembly. Lots of Mercurys suffer from weak lower units. The late 50’s mercury Mark 25’s (18 to 20 hp) are often found with bad lower units. Later 60’s and early 70’s 20 hp Mercurys have the same weakness. Other weird things about old Mercurys include little lead seals on the crankcases so that dealers could tell if an owner had disassembled the engine, thereby voiding the warranty (if the engine was still covered by the warranty, why would the owner be trying to fix it himself??). Late 50’s and early 60’s Mercurys from 10 to 28 hp featured an “automatic transmission” that made water pump impeller replacement an almost impossible task - steer well clear of Mercurys of that era that feature both the shift and the throttle combined in the twist grip. Collectors love old Mercs, but I would not recommend them to anyone else.

One to steer clear of. Many late'50s /early'60s 2-cylinder Mercurys were fitted with an "automatic transmission" that combined both the throttle and the shift in the twist-grip. It is EXTREMELY difficult to change a water pump impeller on one of these. I did it once, cobbling-up special tools as I went. I just wanted to see if I could do it, sort of a "right-of-passage" thing. Spare yourself the agony. Don't expect your local Mercury dealer to have the tools or know-how to do this either. I have heard of retired Mercury mechanics who make good money "on the side" changing impellers on these things. Also be aware that the new parts that are available for old Mercurys are generally more expensive than the same parts for OMC's. Price was about $100 and a Mercury collector bought it."

Sounds like a challange but it can be done. Look at it this way eother you do it and it works or you just leave it alone and it still does not work.

There is currently a post on John's Old Merc website about this very operation. A manual is recommended, but the task is not described as impossible--just a bit complex and tedious. Never done one myself, but it is somewhat intriguing...good luck.

By the way, I disagree with the article quoted above that would steer anyone but a collector away from old Mercs. I'm a fisherman, not a collector, and I like my old Mercs just fine. They have quirks--hell, so do I, maybe that's why I like them. As for the seal on the crankcase, it is nice to be able to look at a 50-some year old motor and know the case hasn't been opened. OMC vs Merc, Chevy vs Ford, Windows vs Apple--that's what makes the world go round!

hi! look on ebay and search for mercury workshop cd, I just got one and it helped me change the impellar no problem, get the kit before you start and check to see if it has the plastic tube which connects the pump to the tube into the block, the place we got the kit from tried to sell us the tube seperate at £7.00 and it was included in the kit,
having said that after changing it we still didnt have tell tale showing so had to take of both the exhaust cover and the head cover to find that there were blockages after pokeing about with a bit of stout wire we cleared it and everything on the water side is now OK.
