Mercury 50 hp OB- 1975 for the year - 4 cylinder. Excellent on fuel, starts well, pushes my 14.5 Fiberglass anchor boat up to 32 mph.
I do have 2 problems, and I think they are caused by the same thing. If I idle (troll) for longer than 10 minutes, the motor sputters, and finally dies. I have to whirl the starter and choke it for it to fire. If I am lucky enough to press the choke before it dies, it will rev up again, and I can go another minute or so idling. The only way to get the idle back is to use the fast idle lever and rev for 30 - 40 seconds. Then I can idle for a little while longer. I had some mercury schmuck who said he can fix anything (uh-huh) and he did find a cracked idle air tube, and it idles all day in his tub, as well as when I have the ears on running water though it. I also had the carbs done (just in case) and had a new fuel pump, plugs, etc. Compression is good. Just when I am on the water does the above happen (is it a load problem?) also when I go to the dock, and switch to reverse to stop, *poof* stalls again.
I really like this boat and just want to have a normal fishing experience like everybody else. But the boat shop finds nothing else wrong. The motor fires up just by breathing on the key, excellent, but punch the throttle without a 30-40 second hi idle (even when fully warmed up) and it will stumble and die.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to anticipate any questions. Thanx in advance guys - great group!

You still need the carb adjusted in the water in gear

classic sign of a weak fuel pump. the bowls are running dry. try pumping the primer immediatly prior to take off and before it dies.

I have pumped the bulb til its hard - brand new hose and bulb/checkvalve, is there something that resembles a valve that keeps fuel up? It runs flawless except for this annoying problem. Thanx for the replys!

Speaking generically check that the pulse port and any hoses running from pulse port to fuel pump are clear.Be sure the fuel connectors are not sucking air.Check and replace as required any fuel lines you haven't replaced yet.

Well, the compression is good, that rules our the pistons, I just want the fish to stop laughing at me when I troll and stall... :)
