One is a 1988 D model and the other is a 1989 B model.Whats the difference between the two?I suspect they have different electronic packages.I am making one good one out of two, I need to move the electronics from the 89 to the 88 model. Anybody see any problems that i might run into?

Hi, probably none,I think the difference in the letters is the "model run". example: Just imagine "A" 10,000 number of units in january: "B" may have 10,000 in feb, "C" in another and so on and so on.With usually minor, if any changes from model to model. I bet you they are identical. Are the coils the same color,Black or blue.Except for ignition changes all 50hp powerheads from '84 thru '94 are almost exactly alike. After Mercury bought them they changed ignition, fuel pump and lower unit and maybe other things I don't know about but mechanically they were pretty much the same.Don't quote me but I think I'm pretty close.Anyway it should be no problem taking one ignition and putting it on another. Also if you change ignition systems you have to use the same sparkplugs for that system as they use two different plugs.Hang on to both lower units, you might need a spare, as lower units and blown head gaskets are two of the weak spots of a Force.

I think you'll find that the "D" model 88 and the "B" model 89 are the same. In 88 the A, B, and C models used a different trigger assy than the "D". The "D" 88 uses the same trigger as the 89-94.
