i have been looking for a part time helper. today i hired a 19 y/o who seemed smart enough to know which way to turn a wrench. well, to my surprise and joy, he is a lot sharper than that. i started teaching him this morning. when we started trouble shooting the 3rd motor, he had picked up everything i had taught him, and came up the correct reason the motor was not running correctly. drug free, and a nice guy, who wants to learn.

what more could i ask for.

Half of Kates employees don't have licenses, and she manages a bank of america branch. Go figure, they are all early 20s, all have bachelor degrees, and all work for 12 bucks an hour as tellers to.

Two years ago we pick up some work at a new mine site but before we could start the job I had to have the crew do a pee test (drug/ alc )
four of the five guys refused to take the test as they new they would fail.
it was time for a new crew.

I'd have loved to work on old OB's and learn from a pro at such a young age.

no he started on a 1995 115 Johnson. today a 225 rude.

i am just as pleased today, as yesterday. he also said before he left today, that he enjoyed learning, and enjoyed working with me.

smart, clean, respectful, no cussing, etc.

seems like he has a great work ethic - I agree , rare, work him hard, treat him fair, let him learn, , let him falter, see if he listens.....you both will benefit each other.... I love hearing good stuff like this!

when i was travelling a few years back(for 7 yrs) i saw this attitude in young men at the Bass Store(??) in MO, Springfield, while I was looking at shotguns. boats, etc - is kinda oood i got this flashback from your post - and also in OK, some of the friendliest folks on earth......and i thought to myself, after replying to their courtesy, "these boys are our future" , and got the pleasure to also fish with young guys like this in TN.FL, seemingly most of the southern states............, good values, respect, and open minds as opposed to open mouths.....really made/makes me feel good - they had/have some great parents.....

hey trashdaddy , i would love to work with you, but a little far to drive daily. I love a good challange. always have tinkered with small motors, i know only what i have learned about outboards from my own and iboats. i have thought about that school for outboards but to far to drive also.. wish i could find a job around alabama like that where i could make pretty good, and do something i enjoy. but til then glad you found a good helper.

There is decent young men out there, its just ashame that the punks and thugs out number them.

I got an assistant now. He is not very book smart, but show him once and he retains it. I really like him because he will ask questions instead of doing something that he knows nothing about. The young man got his first blister on his hand the other day. I didn't even know he got it until I spotted on the palm of his hand. He didn't complain one bit. I know grown men that whine and cry if they get a blister. Almost like the end of their life for them.
