Jason, the shop is only 1 year old, and growing. i had a friend help last year in the evening, on thing i could not do alone. the business is growing, but still not enough for another full timer. it is a funny business, nothing to do, then you have the shop full and a waiting list, the nothing.

Its nice to hear about a positive thing when it come to young people in the work place. I think a lot of the time you just need to get the right teacher with the right student. I see a lot of employers tend to expect there staff (entry level) to know every thing . Good on you for taking the time to show him the ropes.:)

They are out there. Just not as many as there use to be. I'm sure he will learn a lot from you. Best of luck...
Good for you TD.
I have one working for me in a auto repair shop.

He is a jc student studying auto repair. Smart, polite, quick, on time,
a little messy but a "breath of fresh air". These kind of kids are getting quite
rare these days.:(

And isn't it a "good feeling" to mentor these guy's? I was mentored
when I was that age so I kind of feel a responsibility to "pay it back".:)

I was an auto mechanic when I was 18, small used car/new conversion van dealership. I had electrical exp from installing stereos and alarms so they brought me in as an oil changer/tire rotator/fix the tv's/radios/light in the vans type of guy. The only other guy in the shop was an old timer named Chuck. He was in his early 60's and still wrenching. He spent 35+ years at a GMC dealership before getting laid off. He took me under his wing and within 3 months I was doing ball joints, front end work, steering and suspension, brakes, diagnostics, the works.

Chucks best advice ever to me was this.

He said "listen Jason, don't go out of your way to impress anybody, don't rush stuff, take your time, get it right, treat it as if it were your own. And don't get frustrated, i'm 60, things still kick my *** to this day, if you can't get it walk away and take a minute, take an hour if you need to, if your heads not clear you won't figure it out, no matter what it is". Best advice I've ever recieved.

i know one auto mech and one bike mech like that and you better believe they get all the business I can send them. both my stuff and anyone who asks me for a referral. so few mechs out there that think that way.

agreed. a lady kept calling, "is her boat ready"? i finally told her, " that, if she did not have time for me to properly trouble shoot it, and repair it properly, that she should just come pick it up."
