No, they are not designed to break if you get a hydrolock, and probably the bendix isn't the main problem. What usually happens is the nose cone of the starter breaks off. Only way to find out is to take it off and look.
You then need to get a new MARINE starter (not automotive).

When your engine diesels, you only get a little water in, not quarts and gallons, and a hydrolock only needs a few ounces of water in the cylinders to lock the engine, you are not going to get a lot of water in the oil. On a good engine, it doesn't go past the rings. That's why it's still in the cylinders.

I really think you saved the motor Robert.
Focus on getting the starter removed today and seeing what you have.
That boat is a 1996 Volvo correct?

The Napa Marine parts book shows about 3 different ones.Depending on the bolt pattern and flywheel size.

You have either a 94 or 95 engine, but the starter is the same for either year (and newer). The Volvo PN is 3860764, I would bet that NAPA can cross reference that number with no problem.

Re: I hope i did not trash my drive train PLEASE HELP!!!

It is a 1995, thanks for the P/N

The only problem I have is that i am 6'5" and i cannot get to the parts of the starter that i need to in order to remove it. I tried contorting every which way, i can see it fine i am just too big. Being new to the area i only have a one mechanically inclined friend and he is out of town. I am trying to figure out how i can get the boat out of the water with no success so far

It appears the insurance company may cover some of this but they want to send an agent out in a couple of days. Will things be ok until then if i go turn it by hand here and there? I am trying to do anything and everything i can to salvage this situation i just dont have the resources to fix it right now.

Have i at least stabilized the situation?? Can i afford to wait for an adjuster or is it worth it to pay a couple of hundred dollars for another tow and more money to rent a truck to pull it out of the water and get it to a marina before anything else happens

please advise and thanks so much for the help, my wife and I really appreciate it

Re: I hope i did not trash my drive train PLEASE HELP!!!

Just got off the phone with the insurance company, they issued me a claim # and said i will speak with the licensed adjuster tomorrow but could not provide me any info on coverage so i am in the dark about if they are going to cover or not. I am not sure if i should be running around crazy today on a Sunday trying to do something or if i should wait to speak to them

Anyone have any experience on this??

The Volvo number Don gave you crosses over to Napa part #18-5913 according to the parts book.
I think the motor will be ok with the oil poured in the cylinders for a couple days.
Even if you got it out of the water the marina may be a couple days before they can get to it...
Can you get one hand under the starter and feel the mounting bolts?

Re: I hope i did not trash my drive train PLEASE HELP!!!

I can't get my forearms at the right angle (plus mechanically I am an idiot!!)

Should I wait for the insurance adjuster?

Do I need to continue to go down to the slip each day in the meantime and crank it by hand or should i leave well enough alone for now??

Is it safe to say i got all of the water out of the cylinders by turning it by hand so much last night. I am a little concerned that when it sounded like we might get it started i put the plugs back in etc, do i need to keep oiling up the cylinders and turning it or did putting all of that oil in the cylinders do enough that even when it came pouring back out along with some water while handcranking it with the plugs out am i ok. I do not have oil filled in the cylinders now. It was cranked a ton of times by hand until nothing was coming out of them for some time and then the plugs were put back in, is this ok??

Sorry to be obsessive but this boat has been our main source of fun all summer and we have a baby on the way this spring and i can't afford to have to buy a new engine or boat, etc. I am just stressed out about it

I dont want to overreact but i also dont want to be lazy and not do all i can to save it

What do you think??

As long as you have oil in the cylinders and it turns it should be ok until the adjuster gets there.
Maybe Don has some further input on it but i think you saved the motor Robert.

Hi Robert, I've been following this thread and don't think I saw yet if you sucked out the engine oil and changed with new. You may want to do that incase any water in the cylinders got forced past the rings while you were trying to crank it before removing the plugs. Also, if you filled the cylinders with oil, make sure you get that oil out before putting the plugs in and cranking it over. Oil won't compress any better than water.

I don't know how automotive starters and marine starters compare, but on my truck, if the battery is weak, the starter will just spin and not engage the flywheel. As people have alread mentioned, check and charge the battery and then the starter may engage properly.

Re: I hope i did not trash my drive train PLEASE HELP!!!

The batter read 14.3 volts so tht is as good as it is going to get

I went down today and pulled the plugs AGAIN and sprayed about 1.5-2 seconds of WD-40 in each cylinder. I put the plugs back in and the wires back on and i turned the engine by hand putting a socket on the drive pulley, it is hard to turn it that way but i was about to get 5-6 complete turns of the pulley so i would think that means i am not seized up and should be OK. Is this accurate

I ordered a new marine started by Delco from NAPA that will be there tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night we are going to swap out the starter
What do you think the odds are that we will be ok???? Is there anything else i can do in the meantime

I cant relax, until I know my boat is not effective just a pile of junk now, main reason we bought it was because it was so well maintained and only had 89 hours on it

i Hope that part number here in the right one. I just looked on napa online and when i seach down to a 1995 Volvo Penta GS engine i get this for the starter

Part: RPS 6409
Product Line: Rayloc Power Sport

Am i going to find tomorrow that i bought the wrong starter - this one is a little cheaper too but i dont care i just want the right one

I also noted that the 18-5913 is $75 bucks less online, that is like 30% less, why is NAPA so expensive

Don - My friends wife's brother is a marine mechanic 30 minutes away. I bought a new starter that he will pick up tomorrow from Napa using the number Gary gave me that came from the volvo number you gave. The mechanic is going to come, listen and if it is what we think it is sawp the starter out and he said it should fire up

Does this sound like the definitive right course of action

Napa and Sierra use the same part numbers. Most are Sierra parts but the one Robert ordered is a AC delco starter.
This is another one that should fit if the Napa one is not correct,
Standard ground shipping is next day to Lake Norman.
