Welcome to the club (cult?).

I think I saw this on ebay, right? Looks like you got a good buy and a sound boat to work with. Keep us up to date on progress.

Hey Douglas, nice boat, looks familiar, check out my resto thread in my signature. I had an electric shift Evinrude on mine when I got it. It didn't want to go into neutral, which made starting it a real pain. When I looked into it and couldn't find a way to shift it manually in case of failure, I decided to sell it right away. I know I could have fixed the neutral problem, but I didn't want to have to worry about future malfunctions on the water. Put your location in your profile, we like to know where everyone is from. I see Wisconsin on the boat, I'm up in Price County. Welcome to the forum!!

Ya the numbers lie on the boat, I live in a small town in Illinois 40 mins from Davenport Ia about 6 minutes from the rock river and 20 minutes from the mississippi. But my favorite place to fish is land between the lakes in Ky.

Great Boat I have had El. shift as well as Manual which my Johnson 200 is . Never had a problem with any of them and I run them hard. MOST IMPORTANT keep it serviced. Esp. the fluid in the lower gear caseing. Most of these older motors speak well if they are still running. Says a lot of good things about them. Service Service Service. Good luck, looks like its ready to use. I have done nothing to mine except change the kicker and wireing. If it is not broken Im not going to waste a lot of time and money. Gezz I have had my 22 Holiday 4 years this Summer. I drain the lower unit every winter and replace oil. Caution use ( Electric Shift oil )if needed, It is not the same as regulsr gear oli. I COULD CRY when I see what you can buy a boat for. We pay that much for a trailer and more for the motors on the west coast ED

Nice boat! I was wondering when someone would grab that one. Its been on Ebay several times. Rawhide has two other aluminum Starcrafts that they put on Ebay.....a yellow '66 Jet,and a 16' runabout that is orange don't remember the year early 70's I think.

Good luck, you'l have fun. There is so much information here, it's fantastic.

Re: I just bought a 73 16 ss

Nice boat and welcome to the club!!! Here's the deal on that motor. It's a good motor and if it's running and the electric shift is working I'd sure as heck run it. But if it's not, I wouldn't dump a lot of money into it because you don't want to do that and then blow one of the the NLA parts. I'd probably be willing to throw some carb kits or coils and that type of thing at it. Probably not a power pack. The electric shift lower unit uses a different kind of lube than normal outboard (Type C I think) so make sure you use the right kind. If it isn't immediately working, that may be a reason why it isn't. Here's what you could be looking forward to http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/Boat Project/?action=view&current=HoleShot.flv

The boat did about 34-35 but it always felt like it was plowing a bit to me. I'm sure with some work on my motor height and prop I could have seen closer to 40. My 18' SS hit 39 with only a 90HP with 3 adults.

My dad would kill me if I said yes, but i'd just grab a tent and head down the campground is cheap if you don't need water and electric hook ups

I am hoping i can get out on the water this year with out doing to much work to the boat. If not guess i will be in the garage till i get it done seeing as i don't work right now. I do love this site best forums i could find on the web:)

Thanks for the reply douglas1978, looks like a great area. I might have to take the Grand kids for a camping trip, I would like them to see some elk and bison.

Wow Douglas, it dosen't look like you need to do much to that boat, great buy. I had an elect shift on the motor that came with my boat. The engine ran great, but would not shift. I literally looked around for 1 1/2 yrs and could not find a used lower unit or parts. Everyone around here told me to get rid of it or change to regular shift? Stiil have the motor, just sitting, but maybe one day I'll find what I need. Any motor is as good as its maintanence, just take care of her. Welcome. Dale

On the bright side if the electronics fail it will default to fwd. No one has said anything about it has to be running to shift so don't condemn it until you get it running.
